Marian Hill & Lauren Jauregui – Back to Me Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

Back to Me Lyrics

[Verse 1: Samantha Gongol]
I've been looking at you with a little something
That you've been ignoring
You've been looking at me with
I don't know what exactly, but it's boring
Play it cool, but I see through it

You should listen to the music
Boy, I know you want it so you better get up on it
Or you'll lose it, lose it, lose it

[Pre-Chorus 1: Samantha Gongol]
Mind if I slow you down?
No reply, you'll come round

[Chorus: Samantha Gongol]
Love to watch you try and turn your back to me
When I know that any minute you'll be back to me
Back, back, back to me
Back, back, back, back, back, back, back to me
Love to watch you try and turn your back to me
When I know that any minute you'll be back to me
Back, back, back to me
Back, back, back, back, back, back, back to me

[Verse 2: Lauren Jauregui]
Baby, could you shut up?
'Cause I don't need you to come up with excuses
I just need your eyes on me
So I can see you watching me moving, moving, moving
So soft and cryptic
Oh, while you listen to the music
Boy, I know you want it so you better get up on it
Or you'll lose it, I'll prove it

I made this beat for a session with an artist named Brika. She’s a singer out of Florida. Going into in the session, I asked for vocals of hers to mess around and chop up and do things with. I made this beat, and I played it for her, and she liked some other ones better, and we moved on. I played it for Sam and she loved it. Right after I made it, I also had this idea for it—the melody of the chorus, and I also had that back to me lyric in my head.

From there, I started writing it with Sam and the verse came about. It was definitely melody first for that verse. It’s a super unique melody, so it was very much an exercise in writing words that would sound really dope in that melody.

A lot of it was like “go go go,” because she came over for a night, and her schedule is so crazy. After we got a good take of her verse, I was like, “Great that’s good. Now riff a lot. Just sing as many ad-libs as we can so I can have stuff to play with.“ She did the harmonies, too, real quick. She has an amazing harmonic ear. She wrote most of the harmony that she sings on there.

When asked what message they wanted to send with the song:

Jeremy LLoyd:
“We’re thinking about [like] empowering people, kind of specifically women because it’s a female voice singing.”

“We’re all about they’re (the woman) in charge, they’re the one making it sexy.”

Lauren Jauregui:
“It’s a sexy song without being too cliche about it.”
