The very talented Asian-American actor of TV and film Wong is well known for his admired performance as Song Liling in his Broadway debut, “M. Butterfly” in 1988. His mesmerizing act won an array of richly deserved awards such as 1988 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor, Clarence Derwent Award, the Drama Desk Award, and Theater World Award. Wong’s subsequent movie and television roles have been much less distinguished and challenging, sometimes just hardly transcending stereotypes through the sheer force of his attractive personality and impeccable craft.

Early Life & Education

Tony Award winner BD Wong is an American actor, the only actor in Broadway history to receive the Tony Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Desk Award, Clarence Derwent Award, and Theatre World Award for the role of M. butterfly. He is originally from Hong Kong but holds American nationality and belongs to Chinese and American ethnicity.

The 56-years-old Wong grew up in San Francisco to Roberta Christine, a telephone company supervisor, and a postal worker, William D. Wong. He also has one younger and one elder brother.

Wong studied Lincoln High School, where he learned acting and featured as the main character in huge school plays, and later he joined San Francisco State University.

Career

Wong became famous from his Broadway debut in “M. Butterfly” along with John Lithgow. He appeared on the big screen in “The Freshman” in 1990, in 1991 to re-create of “Father of the Bride” and its sequel, “Father of the Bride Part II," Jurassic Park in 1993. He also delivered the voice of Caption Shang in Disney’s “Mulan” in 1998, and the video game “Kingdom Hearts II."

In 2004, Wong played a role in Stephen Sondheim’s “Pacific Overtures." In 2008, he featured in the one-man show “Herringbone," where he portrayed twelve characters, at McCarter Theatre at Princeton University. In 2009, he brought the show to the “La Jolla Playhouse” in San Diego.

In 2014, Wong featured in the U.S. premiere of James Fenton’s admired adaptation of “The Orphan of Zhao," a classic legend that has its origins in the 4th century BC is an epic story of revenge and self-sacrifice.

In July 2011, Wong stated his departure from the cast of “Law & Order: SVU," to join other NBC police drama “Awake," in the role of Dr. Johnathan Lee. He guests featured in the 13th season episode of Law & Order: SVU entitled “Father Dearest," which aired on 2 May 2012.

Wong was named Artist-in-Residence at La Jolla Playhouse, in 2015. He guests featured on an NCIS: New Orleans episode 1. 13 titled “The Walking Dead," aired on 3 February 2015. He also guests featured as the mysterious White Rose in episodes 8 and 10 of USA Network’s as Mr. Robot, back in that role for the show’s second season.

Personal Life

The veteran actor BD Wong began dating his longtime boyfriend, Richie Jackson in 1988. It was the most talked about thing in the industry. However, they did not get married.

In 2000, the ex-couple had twin sons, Boa Dov Wong, and Jackson Foo Wong. Their kids were born via a surrogate mother, using Wong’s sperm and an egg contributed by Jackson’s sister. But unfortunately, their first son Boaz died after 90 minutes of his birth.

Wong wrote a memoir about his experiences of surrogacy entitled “Following Foo: the Electronic Adventures of the Chestnut Man.” Soon after the release of the book, Wong and Jackson broke up their relationship in 2004.
