- Clint Barton was at home, when Thanos activated the infinity stones. Clint suddenly realizes that his entire family has disappeared and is nowhere to be found.
It has been Twenty-three days after Thanos used the Infinity Gauntlet to disintegrate half of all life in the universe. Stark and Nebula were last seen on the planet Titan, the only survivors of the Snap in that particular group of Avengers and Guardians. They grabbed one of the available spaceships and tried to make it back to Earth.
Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) (An ex-U.S. Air Force pilot and new Avenger whose DNA was altered during an accident, imbuing her with superhuman strength, energy projection, and flight) rescues Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) (The benefactor and member of the Avengers who aids them by using Electro-mechanical suits of armor of his own making) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) (A former member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Avenger, and adopted daughter of Thanos who was raised with Gamora as siblings) from deep space and returns them to Earth. The duo were stuck on a spaceship, without propulsion and were drifting in space, and about to run out of oxygen when Danvers found and rescued them.
They reunite with the remaining Avengers-Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) (An Avenger and genius scientist who, because of exposure to gamma radiation, possesses enhanced strength and a monstrous appearance), Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) (The leader of the Avengers. A World War II veteran, he was enhanced to the peak of human physicality by an experimental serum and frozen in suspended animation before waking up in the modern world), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) (A former member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and now Avenger who is a genetically-engineered raccoon-based bounty hunter, mercenary, and master of weapons and battle tactics), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) (An Avenger and the king of New Asgard, based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name. Thor now wields a mystical ax known as Stormbreaker, after the destruction of his hammer, Mjolnir), Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) (A highly trained spy, Avenger, and former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Romanoff continues to command several teams from around the galaxy in the Avengers headquarters), and James Rhodes (John Cheadle) (A former officer in the U.S. Air Force and Avenger who operates the War Machine armor).
The Avengers track the energy signature of the infinity stones and find Thanos (Josh Brolin) (An intergalactic warlord from Titan who collected the six Infinity Stones to impose his will on all life in the universe) on an uninhabited planet. It looks like Thanos used the stones again 2 days ago.
They plan to retake and use the Infinity Stones to reverse the disintegration, but Thanos reveals he destroyed them to prevent further use. An enraged Thor decapitates Thanos.
Five years later, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) (An Avenger and former petty criminal who acquired a suit that allows him to shrink or grow in scale and increase in strength) escapes from the quantum realm, when a rat activates the Quantum tunnel by mistake in a storage compound.
Lang travels to the Avengers compound, where he explains to Romanoff and Rogers that he experienced only five hours while trapped. He entered the Quantum realm before Thanos and Hope (Evangeline Lilly) was supposed to pull him out. Hope disappeared in the snap and Lang got stuck.
Theorizing the quantum realm could allow time travel to the past, the three ask Stark to help them retrieve the Stones from the past to reverse Thanos' actions in the present, but Stark refuses to help. Stark is married to Pepper and even has a daughter named Morgan.
After talking with his wife, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Stark relents and works with Banner, who has since merged his intelligence with the Hulk's strength, and the two successfully build a time machine. Stark creates a time travel GPS which allows the user to enter and exit the Quantum Realm at precise points in time. Lang provides the limited supply of Pym particles that he has left.
Banner warns that changing the past does not affect their present and any changes instead create branched alternate realities.
Banner and Rocket go to the Asgardian refugees' new home in Norway-New Asgard-to recruit Thor, now an overweight alcoholic, despondent over his failure in stopping Thanos.
In Tokyo, Romanoff recruits Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) (A master archer, Avenger, and former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.), now a ruthless vigilante named Ronin following the disintegration of his family.
Banner, Lang, Rogers, and Stark travel to New York City in 2012. They have only enough Pym particles for one round trip each.
Banner visits the Sanctum Sanctorum and convinces the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) to give him the Time Stone. The Ancient One only relents when she is told that Dr Strange willingly handed over the Time Stone to Thanos.
Rogers successfully retrieves the Mind Stone (which was inside the Scepter), but Stark and Lang's attempt to steal the Space Stone (which was inside the Tesseract) goes awry and 2012 Loki (Tom Hiddleston) manages to escape with it. Rogers and Stark then travel to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in 1970, where Stark obtains an earlier version of the Space Stone and encounters his father, Howard (John Slattery), in the process, while Rogers steals several Pym Particles from Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to return to the present.
Rocket and Thor travel to Asgard in 2013, extracting the Reality Stone from Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and retrieving Thor's hammer, Mjolnir.
Nebula and Rhodes travel to Morag in 2014 and steal the Power Stone before Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) can.
Rhodes returns to the present with the Power Stone, but Nebula is incapacitated when her cybernetic implants link with those of her past self. Through this connection, 2014 Thanos learns of his future success and the Avengers' attempts to undo it. Thanos captures present-Nebula and sends past-Nebula to the present in the former's place.
Barton and Romanoff travel to Vormir, where the Soul Stone's keeper, the Red Skull, reveals it can only be acquired by sacrificing someone they love. Romanoff sacrifices herself, allowing Barton to obtain the Soul Stone.
Reuniting in the present, the Avengers fit the Stones into a Stark-created gauntlet, which Banner uses to resurrect all those whom Thanos disintegrated. Past-Nebula uses the time machine to transport past-Thanos and his warship to the present, where he attacks the Avengers' compound, planning to destroy and then rebuild the universe with the Stones.
Nebula convinces past-Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to betray Thanos and kills her past self. Stark, Rogers, and Thor fight Thanos but are outmatched. Thanos summons his army to devastate the Earth, but a restored Stephen Strange arrives with other sorcerers, the restored Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, the armies of Wakanda and Asgard, and the Ravagers to fight Thanos and his army alongside Danvers, who destroys Thanos' warship as she arrives.
After overpowering the heroes, Thanos seizes the gauntlet, but Stark steals the Stones back and uses them to disintegrate Thanos and his army, then dies from the energy emitted in the process.
Following Stark's funeral, Thor appoints Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) as the ruler of New Asgard and joins the Guardians of the Galaxy, while Quill plans a search for 2014 Gamora.
Rogers returns the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir to their original places in time and remains in the past to live with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).
Merging back in the present, an elderly Rogers passes on his shield and mantle to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). In the past, Rogers and Carter share a dance as they promised to and kiss.
