One of the things I find facinating about Don Ellis is how you can re-listen to his recordings and still find new ideas. This recently happened to me as I listened to "Autumn", the album that followed "Electric Bath" and "Shock treatment". I owned this album on vinyl in the '70s when I first got into Ellis. Mostly I listened to the two live tracks; "K.C. Blues" (based on a Charlie Parker solo) and "Indian Lady" a fast driving (and in my opinion, more exciting) live take of the studio track off Electric Bath. Both tracks were recorded Live at Stanford University. The remainder of the album is made up of studio tracks, including the original studio version of Pussy Wiggle Stomp, which on the "Live at the Fillmore" album became a faster, more driving encore to an excellent live show. Also on "Autumn" is "Child of Extacy", where Ellis's lead trumpet, Glenn Stuart is allowed to show his stuff in excellent fashon. And there is an odd litle diddy, Scratt and Fluggs, a jazz/psychedelic/dixieland/bluegrass number. The remaining track is "Variation for Trumptet", a magnum opus that is the longest track on the album at 17:17.
But back to my original thought... I purchased the "Autumn" CD recently in an effort to upgrade my Ellis collection and have those live tracks I mentioned above. So, on a short car trip, I popped "Autumn" in the CD player and listened to the entire album. And what caught my attention was that extended piece "Variation For Trumpet". While I had listened to "Variation For Trumpet" before on vinyl, perhaps I didn't appreciate it on my old stereo. Listening to the clarity of the track on CD, I became enthralled with the complexity, the colors and textures this opus held. It was a thoughouly enjoyable and fulfilling experience, like discovering and appreciating Don Ellis all over again.
Originally I might have given this album 4 stars, but having reached a fuller appreciation of the complexities, concepts, textures and colors provided by Don Ellis and his excellent orchestra, I have to give it five.
Listen to the album. Let it grow on you.

This was a classic Don Ellis album which I bought in 1968 when I was a junior in high school. It blew my mind ... plus a 58 minute LP! Unheard of. I recently purchased again now on CD most of Ellis's recordings and thanks to Nick DiScala for doing such a wonderful endeavor! Great. A few months ago I searched out Autumn on CD and found a seller in the UK (amazon.uk) who had a copy and selling it at an exhorbitant rare collector's price. I bought it not knowing when a new CD of this recording would be coming out. The copy I bought was an original Columbia CD release of Autumn. It is a clean master with no noise or hiss. (the 60s re-verb does get too much but the music is fantastic!) I just purchased the other day Wounded Bird Records' version and I am returning it to Amazon. Nick ... It has noise and hiss all over the master. This is sad. The master volume is hotter than my Columbia version and I was hoping that the heavy re-verb would have been reduced. Not so. Could it be only my copy? Please check on this Nick because Autumn deserves a great treatment. It is a masterpiece and the re-master has to be corrected. Would you like to hear my Columbia CD release and compare the difference? Do you have the copyrights? Please check this out and let us all know that Autumn will go down again as one of our all time favorites. In the meantime, 5 stars for Don Ellis and especially the music of Autumn but ... 2 stars for the disappointing sound quality of this 2007 release.

I've been over the moon for this album for several years now, and I must say this cd release sounds WAY better than my mp3 copy. The bottom end is warmer, the dynamics fuller. I can't say enough good things about the music itself. I've literally cried tears of joy (no pun intended) over this album. As a blend of composition and collective improvisation, "Variations for Trumpet" has few equals, and the live rendition of "Indian Lady" is so raucous, it practically makes "Kick Out the Jams" by the MC5 sound docile by comparison. Even the 4/4 pieces "K.C. Blues" and "Child of Ecstasy" are stunning. "Live at Monterey" and "Electric Bath" are amazing albums too, but I think this one really captures Ellis and his orchestra at their peak.

I have been hoping someone would reissue this and here it is in fabulous sonic glory! I had not heard of the Fivefour label but they have mastered this cd so well I have no hesitation recommending it. The music is thoroughly reviewed elsewhere and full of killer charts and playing that is thrilling. If you like this, I'd also recommend you check out Hal Russell /NRG Ensemble on ECM as his band is also a mix of killer charts and players who are also having fun dazzling the heck out of their audiences. If you want more Ellis, I highly recommend "Live at Monterey" It is a superbly recorded live set that will blow your socks off and your toes too!

Don was entering the Autumn of his time on Planet Earth about the time this recording was first released. This offering provides ample evidence of his talent, vision, technique, humor, and explorer's spirit. A case could be made for this recording being the best single disc CD of Ellis' music and performances of same. If you have the grit to challenge today with yesterday' s vision of Jazz' s future, then treat yourself and your Cool Auntie to a visit to permanent Autumn.

This is, without a doubt, the very best band I have ever heard in my entire life (I'm 64). To swing and wail like this in these odd time signatures in truly mind boggling as well as emotionally exciting! I have 8 Ellis CDs now, and have yet to be disappointed by any of them. Excellent playing!!! Too bad he had to die so young!

Not for the non-fan

This is a typical Don Ellis recording. Playing is good, really good in parts, but the whole thing is a bit chaotic. There is lots of interesting stuff here - complex rhythms, and a studio version of the classic Pussy Wiggle Stomp (which also appears on some live recordings), electronic effects on trumpet. I quite like this stuff in moderate doses, but playing it around the house will not make you popular with people who don't like Jazz or even those who don't like their jazz on the experimental side. I will need to listen to it a few more times to decide if I like it as much as "Soaring" or "Tears of Joy" which were the two Don Ellis recordings I knew best. I would say this one is more interesting than the "Live in 3 and 2/2/4 time" and "Live at Montreux" recordings, which I have, but only listen to rarely.

It is good to see that the work of Don Ellis is back on the market. One can only hope that this leads to a full revaluation of this pioneer of Jazz and brave defender of the large band format at a time when it was considered dead. The test of any work is does it sound dated, or does it still sound fresh. the Freshness of this work is scintillating. Listen with open ears and enjoy!

This Don Ellis big band was amongst the best ever. Just one track is alone worth the money - Pussy Wiggle Stomp. My candidate for the 'hottest' track ever from any jazz era.
Highly recommended.
