Editorial Reviews
Rare recording capturing the Psychedelic legends live at the Golden Gate Park on July 5th, 1969 (when they shared the bill with the Grateful Dead). Features tracks from the then-current album Volunteers alongside live favorites from the Airplane's earlier days including their two biggest hit singles, 'White Rabbit' and 'Somebody to Love'. Also includes three bonus tracks: 'Jam', one of their trademark improvised jams which showcased their brilliant musicianship, plus two rare non-album cuts: 'Mexico' and 'Uncle Sam Blues', Comes packaged in a beautiful Psychedelic digipak. Charly. 2006.

Jefferson Airplane completists and fans. On the other hand, the
newcomers to the Airplane world will find it a waste of money.
The sound quality of this release is acceptable, but the listener might
find himself listening to "Dryden Plus 5" for some moments, for the
drum kit is too high in the mix and, even though Dryden was surely
talented, this prevents the recording from really showing what the
Airplane was on stage. Jack Casady's bass guitar is almost impossible
to perceive in most numbers, thus the band driving force is quite
missing. In addition to that, Paul Kantner's guitar is also abscent
from most numbers. Fortunately, Kaukonen's work has its presence
assured in the mix and Slick and Balin are thankfully acceptably
recorded too.
The concert took place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, few months
before the recording of `Volunteers' in 1969. Many songs were being
premiered at that time, including 'The Farm' or 'Good Shepherd' (sang
here by Grace, who, after the song is peformed, asks Jorma if he is the
author of the song or if it is a traditional (!)). There are also old
classic numbers like `Somebody To Love' and `White Rabbit'(the bass
guitar line is sorely missed on the latter), and covers such as "Other
Side of This Life" and "Uncle Sam Blues". "Mexico" is announced and
credited on the back cover but NOT PERFORMED. Instead, we have a
performance of "3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds" where Jack Casidy is
finally heard (I suppose he had turned his bass really high).
The band offer fair performances throughout the show. Grace is, as
always, an outstanding singer, impossible to be mistaken for another.
She improvises and takes chances fearlessly as usual. Anyway, she's
better on other Airplane recordings, and that maybe can be applied
to the whole band. There are certainly better live ouputs than
this.
The CD package is quite good, but there are not rare photos or
revealing liner notes. The weakest point of the edition is having
'Mexico' listed when there is another song in its place. ('Mexico' is
not an incredible tune, but a live version would have been nice).
Summing up, nice material for keen Airplane followers, but I strongly
discourage the casual listeners to buy this release.

安い時買ったので後悔は無いけど。

And Jefferson Airplane certainly was at the forefront of this, doing, in mastermind Paul Kantners words, "things that haven't got a name yet". His galactic hymns, the solid songwriting and great vocals of Marty Balin and Grace Slick, the later one of the all time finest women artists, all made up for some very visionary and musically fulfilling albums. So when this CD arrived in a very aesthetic cover the expectations were very high.
But unfortunately the record comp. doesn't seem to have taken the same care with the music as with the package. In fact this isn't more than a rather poor sounding bootleg. The balace being all wrong with the drums and leadguitar totally overpowering the bass and the rythm. And this is really bad, as the late Spencer Dryden's rather incoherrent and confused drumming was the weak link of the band, whereas Jack Cassidy was - and still is - one of the finest bassists around.
The show isn't that hot either, as the band is obviously rather stoned, specially Grace Slick who aborts the otherwise so beautiful "Won't you Try" in a rather silly way, but none the less delivers some fine versions of "Greasy Heart" and "Good Sheperd". There's also a long, somewhat pointless instrumental jam, a long cry from the depth and fluidity of their fellows in Grateful Dead.
If you are an Airplane-fanatic you will probably get this anyway, but if not, there are so many other better J.A.- albums around. In fact this smells a bit of a cheap cash-in on a famous band-name. And although this release is 'authorized' significately no one involved with the band seem to have taken part in the production.
