Arthur Miller | Brief Biography
Arthur Miller (October 17, 1915 – February 10, 2005) was an American playwright and essayist, widely regarded as one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century. He was born in Harlem, New York City, to Polish-Jewish immigrant parents, and grew up in a lower-middle-class family during the Great Depression.
Miller’s first successful play, “All My Sons” (1947), was a critical and commercial success, and it established him as a major voice in American theater. He went on to write several other successful plays, including “Death of a Salesman” (1949), “The Crucible” (1953), and “A View from the Bridge” (1955).
“Death of a Salesman” is considered one of Miller’s masterpieces and is widely regarded as one of the greatest American plays of the 20th century. The play explores the themes of the American Dream, the decline of industry, and the fragmentation of the family, and it remains one of Miller’s most popular and widely performed works.
Miller’s political activism and his relationship with Marilyn Monroe also garnered significant attention. He was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the McCarthy era, and he refused to name names of fellow writers and artists who were suspected of being communists.
In addition to his writing, Miller was also a major figure in American theater and was a co-founder of the ‘International Association of Theatre Critics’. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his life, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for “Death of a Salesman” in 1949, and a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1999.
Arthur Miller died on February 10, 2005, at the age of 89, in Roxbury, Connecticut. 0 0 0.
