Men's 4 x 100 Relay Turns In Golden Performance at 2024 Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.: The UMBC men's track and field program had a historic weekend during the three-day Penn Relay Carnival, including a gold medal-winning relay squad and top finishes at Franklin Field and in the Retriever's record book.

The Men's 4x100 meter relay of Ali BowensJaeden BurkeMarquis Miller, and Chimdi Osuji breezed into finals during the preliminary round with a 41.22 time, settling at second overall for a finals showdown the next day. In the finals, the Retrievers bested Johnson C. Smith of Charlotte, NC, to win the College Men's 4x100 Championship, breaking the tape at 40.97s. 

Some relay members also put their efforts into the College Men's 4x400 meter event as Michael Arnold and Pelumi Olujumu joined Burke and Miller. They collectively raced to an eighth overall seed during the preliminary round Friday afternoon, securing a season's best of 3:15.20s. They turned that momentum into improving upon their season's best during finals Saturday afternoon as they slid up to sixth overall the second go around, crossing the line at 3:13.47s. 

The Men's 4x800 meter squad of Zachary TaylorMark UngerSofiane Compaorg, and Tyler Edson return to Hilltop with a new UMBC school record in the event, making for a stellar performance in the absence of previous 800-meter champion Liam Meginniss. They finished sixth overall this afternoon with a new record time of 7:33.13s. 

For individual top marks from the three-day event, sophomore Iosif Papa came in fourth for the Championship Men's Discus Throw event, extending his school record mark with a throw of 55.62 meters. Other individual events from the Penn Relay Carnival at Franklin Field include;

  • 10.74s / 23rd Overall

Men's Triple Jump- (Ibra Khairat)

  • 14.15m / 12th Overall

Men's Discus- (Aiden Walker)

  • 48.66m / 12th Overall

Men's 400m Hurdles (M. Arnold)

  • 52.97s / 15th Overall
