South Abutment Campground

We camped at the COE South Abutment Campground for 3 nights. This is a very clean and well maintained campground. The COE has 3 campgrounds on the lake with electricity and full hookups and several without. The reservation system was out of order so it was first come only. They have a few long term campers who I assume work at the local casinos. Most are there for only a couple days. The lake water is muddy because it comes from the Mississippi River as part of the COE flood control. It is still very pretty and the lake has great fishing. There are a couple hiking trails nearby and also bike only trails and a large frisbee golf course. The hiking trails are only partly marked with blazes but it would be difficult to get lost. There were a lot of folks fishing at the nearby outlet channel and they were catching large crappies. There were a lot of fishing boats leaving from the nearby launch each morning but I didn’t see anyone fishing from the lakeshore. The sunrise over the lake was spectacular every morning. The campsites are spread out and you can get one with water views. There are big trees around most of them. The bathhouse was clean and heated which was nice for the cold nights we were there. They don’t sell firewood in the park but you can buy it on Hwy 304 north of the park. The park office has a volunteer during the day with a lot of brochures and she is very friendly but other than her and the person cleaning the bathhouses we didn’t see any employees around. Paying for your site is done using an envelope at the campground and it’s cash only. If you have a Senior or other Federal camp it’s half price. The park brochure is hard to read and identify the hiking trails and they don’t have printed hiking maps so check the park web page in advance because they have them there.
