Election officials urge Arizonans to make a plan before going out to vote today. Voting sites may have been updated recently.

The Primary Election is July 30, 2024. Early voting for the 2024 Primary Election begins July 3, 2024.

A Primary Election generally serves to select each recognized political parties' nominees, who will then go on to the general election ballot to compete against other party's nominees and any independent candidates. Arizona has an open primary, which allows voters who are not registered with a recognized political party (commonly referred to as "independents") to choose to participate in the Democratic Party or Republican Party Primary Election

To participate in the July 30, 2024 Primary Election, a voter must be registered by the July 1, 2024 voter registration deadline. If you are a registered with the Democratic, Republican, Green, Libertarian or No Labels Party you will only be eligible to receive a Primary Election ballot for that party. If you are an Independent voter, you must contact your County Recorder and select either a Democratic or Republican ballot. The No Labels Party is not holding a Primary Election for any federal, state, or legislative offices.

To register in Arizona, you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States;
  • be a resident of Arizona and your county at least 29 days preceding the next election;
  • be 18 years old on or before the next general election;
  • not have been convicted of treason or a felony (or have had your civil rights restored);
    • Civil rights are automatically restored if you have only one felony conviction, completed your sentence, parole, or probation, and paid any victim restitution in Arizona
    • If the conviction occurred in another state, you must file an application for rights restoration in an Arizona Superior Court
  • not currently be declared an incapacitated person by a court of law with your voting rights revoked.

To check your voter registration status, go to Arizona.Vote and click on the "Your Voter Info" button.

Yes, Arizona's open primary law allows Independent or unaffiliated voters who are registered to vote by the July 1, 2024 voter registration deadline to participate in the Primary Election. Independent voters who wish to participate in the Primary must select one (1) recognized party's ballot, i.e. Democrat or Republican, or a nonpartisan/municipal-only ballot. However, only registered Libertarians can vote in the Libertarian Primary, and only those registered with the Green Party can vote in the Green Party Primary. The No Labels Party is not participating in the Primary Election because of a preliminary injunction issued by the U.S. District Court for Arizona barring No Labels Party candidates from appearing on the Arizona Primary Election ballot (No Labels Party of Arizona v Adrian Fontes, CV-23-02172-PHX-JJT (2024)). No Labels Party voters who are on the Active Early Voting List will automatically be sent a No Labels Party Ballot with no candidates listed unless they contact their County Recorder to determine if a local non-partisan ballot is available or they change their political affiliation on their voter registration before the deadline.

Independent voters on the Active Early Voting List (AEVL) will receive a postcard in the mail asking them to choose which party ballot they wish to receive for the Primary Election. The corresponding primary ballot will then be sent by mail to the voter to complete approximately 27 days prior to the election. Independent voters who go to the polls on Election Day will be given the option to choose a party or nonpartisan/municipal-only ballot at that time.

If county election officials are not able to verify your signature on the ballot affidavit envelope, or if you forget to sign your ballot affidavit envelope, officials will attempt to contact you and you will have until 5 p.m. on the 5th business day following the election to confirm or correct the issue.

However, if you forget to sign your ballot affidavit envelope and drop it off at a voting location on Election Day, you will not be contacted, and will not have an opportunity to correct the issue. Remember to sign your ballot affidavit envelope!

Unofficial results of the Presidential Preference Election will begin updating around 8 p.m. on March 19. The deadline for counties to canvass election returns is April 1, 2024. Statewide results are canvassed on April 4, 2024. That is when results will be official.
