About
The Arc de triomphe was begun in 1806, on the orders of Napoleon I to honour the victories of his Grande Armée. Inspired by the great arches of antiquity, the monument combines the commemorative with the symbolic and it has always played a major role in the national republican consciousness. Every evening, the flame is lit on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the Great War. An exhibition portrays the history and explains its symbolic importance, nationally as well as internationally. The terrace provides superb views both by day and night across the city and its great sweeping avenues.-Opening hours : April to September: from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; October to March: from 10 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.-Closed: 1st January, 1st May, 8th May (morning), 14th July (morning), 11th November (morning), 25th December-Entry fees: Adults = 9,5 €; Concessions = 6 €; Free admission: 18-25 years old* (citizens of one of the 27 countries of the EU or are non-European permanent residents of France) * excluding school groups

- kaidia2017Brisbane, Australia180 contributionsBreathtaking views are worth the climb.Definitely a spectacular structure. Spontaneously decided to go to the top. Paid €13 which I felt was fair for the views and atmosphere. We did have to queue for about 30mins, then we went through security. Know your limits as you do have to climb the spiral staircase to the top.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 29, 2023
- FamilyTime1431Weare, New Hampshire97 contributionsVery intricate detail, it is free to traverse the tunnel and go up to the arc. Tickets are only needed to go inside. We went just so we could say that we saw it. We only walked around the outside, did not feel the need to go inside or to the top. Note that you do NOT need a ticket to walk through the tunnel and go up to the Arc. But the way they have the line and queuing area, it makes it look like you do. It is free to walk up to it via the tunnel.Visited April 2023Written April 30, 2023
- LnihiserDunedin, Florida151 contributionsWhat a great placeWent to the ARC today and it was fabulous. Be prepared though I think there’s about 100 steps possibly to the top of the ARC. And you can do it. You see a lot from up there. It’s really awesome I would definitely add this to your list of things to see while in Paris. It is worth it.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten May 4, 2023
- Sherry KHamburg, Germany9 contributionsA staple for every tourist in ParisYou want a picture of Paris with the Eifel tower...then this might be one of best places to do it. Sure you have to climb the 200+ stairs in a tight Spiral staircase to get there, but I think it was worth it. Tip: buy your tickets online beforehand it will spare you the line.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 14, 2023
- thisgirl_GrayLos Angeles, California2,384 contributionsMust do while in ParisVisited the Arc for the second time in my life. The first time was during the day, but this time was a night visit which I think is the best. This is an activity for the physically fit as there are over 200 stairs if you're planning on walking to the top; but the best views of the city are from the top and you can get a good view of the Eiffel Tower in the distance as well.Visited April 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 14, 2023
- the_globetrottersNorwich, United Kingdom319 contributionsGood experienceGreat architecture and a must do whilst in Paris. Full of people taking selfies against the various carvings but still well worth a visit. We did not go inside as the queue was about 200m long and we were told you can only buy tickets online.Visited May 2023Written May 19, 2023
- Krista PNorthern Arm, Canada7 contributionsMy Favorite PlaceWe climbed over 300 stairs to the top of the Arc de Triomphe and the view was amazing. At the center of a big traffic circle and the meeting point of 12 roads, it is like being at the center of a clock. This was my favorite place in our 12 days in Paris and France.Visited May 2023Written May 23, 2023
- poltorToronto, Canada224 contributionsNice to seeA nice to see in Paris up close. Get the Paris Museum to skip the line and see the Paris skyline from the view from the top. A lot of stairs to climb but a beautiful view! A key landmark in Paris.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 27, 2023
- Marcus D609 contributionsDo not cross the traffic----use the underground entranceThis was our third trip to Paris but the first time we stood under the Arc....it is HUGE. Apparently, the entire city is cleaning and buffing for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The back half of the Arc facing Ave de la Grande Armee is fenced off and you cannot really get to see it. We went at night and just watched the cars/cycles/buses do their dance about the traffic circle.Visited May 2023Written June 17, 2023
- PANDEY JIVaranasi, India435 contributionsAll roads converge at Arc de Triomphe.Arc De Triomphe is like the city centre. Most of the roads converge here. Almost all metro lines pass through here. A historical monument visible from a distance. I skipped the part where we climb the top. You will easily come across the monument commuting through the city.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 3, 2023

This is a magnificent building with lots of security around it. To get close, you must take a pedestrian underpass. Walk along the outside of the ring road till you find what looks like a metro entrance. It isn't one.
The line to go up in the Arc is very long, and the climb is very tough, even for young people. The view from the top is possibly worth it, depending upon how much you like looking at a city from a high vantage point. The climb was probably too hard for us. Nothing in the gift shop was worth buying.
I think the best thing to do is probably to take the underpass, walk around outside the Arc, and photograph it as well as taking close-ups of the statues.

Whatever you do buy skip the line tickets to all attractions it is so worth it. Beautiful views of Paris. I would recommend you go at night as the lights are amazing and the Eiffel Tower lights up on the hour every hour. Good place to watch the crazy traffic below too. Lots of steep steps up and down but disabled can use a lift which leaves 47 steps to the top.

We went mid January mid morning and there was no waiting so skip the line isn't needed at that time of the year. There are 284 spiral steps to get up to the top, but there are some places that you can stand to the side to let others past.
Take the time to watch the film as it gives an excellent explaination of the history and the store has reasonably priced souvenirs.

two hundred years old - started by Napoleon - on one of the biggest and busiest traffic circles in the world; the Arc may not be as well known as the Tower but it is very impressive. The size of the Arc de Triomphe is deceiving - you need to wander the plaza below it (reading about the battles and the troops to whom the Arc is dedicated to) to see the size. there is an underground access and there you can buy tickets to go up. i thnk that the views woudl be very good as the surrounding buidligns are quite low but there was a substantial line both times that we were there.

So first things first buy skip the line tickets online. This will get you half way before still having to join a line. And the line is long. From outside the sculpting is very impressive and comprehensive. Once you're in it's a cool spiral stairway up to the top where you can read some very interesting history about the structure and then head on up to the roof for a lively view of the busy city streets below and monuments surrounding the arch.
Worth doing but be prepared to wait in line even with pre booked tickets.

The arc was a lot larger than what I thought it would be. We came by metro and when we came up to the street level the huge arc was in the middle of the road as a giant roundabout. We had to walk around the edge of the road to get to the underground entrance near Champ Elysees. From there, you could either head up to a ticketing office or just head to the bottom of the arc.
The ticketing office sells tickets to go up the arc but it was closed when we were there so we just walked under the arc. There was construction being done on half of the arc, the back end away from Chap Elysees had a fence around it.
The carving on the arc were amazing. There were 4 big panels, 2 on each side and each had a different scenery. There were also carvings on the inside of the arc, as well as names along the walls.
At the base of the arc, there is a monument with an eternal flame and a crest. It is an amazing monument and something that is really interesting to see. It would've been nice to get some historical information as well.
Definitely a must see when in Paris. It is a nice place to look at history.

Although I am not the biggest fan of the wrapped Arc de Triomphe, we heard it was the last day it would be wrapped when we landed. It is one of those things that is a great experience even if it wasn't your sense of taste.
If anyone is upset because they didn't like it, just know, it'll be there for another 200+ years for you to see it not-wrapped.
Being able to go up to it without all the cars zipping around was also amazing. I have never been able to experience that and it was awesome to just walk up and stand in the giant crazy traffic circle without getting run over.
This was a super fun experience and I am glad we were able to do it. Also highly recommend going during the evening because it was so much more magical.

Amazing views. Really enjoyed seeing the alternative views and taking photos of the city including of the Eiffel Tower which we went up earlier in the day. The city looked beautiful in the early evening. Bought tickets in advance to reduce queue time. Next time I would buy them an hour or so later to catch the sunset (we went at 7.30pm).

It is a must see in Paris.
Feels crazzy that this master piece has gone through 2000 years and still looks gorgeous.
A bit crouded though. I recomend you to go early, you'll take awesome shots with the sunset and it is quieter

I should preface this review by saying we didn't do the climb to the top. I didn't pre-purchase tickets so the queue was too long for the time we had to wait. However, surfacing from the metro tunnels near the arc is still an inspiring experience. Just seeing the detail in the carving on the arc and the crazy Parisian traffic circling it is worth the visit.

There is a guided tour option on the website.
Has anyone experienced it?
I'm curious as to whether it's worth recommending.
And since English is not my first language, I am worried about whether I will be able to understand it well.

The Arc de Triomphe has free entry for 18-25 year olds that are from part of the EU. Does this include the UK now that we have left the EU or not?

For people that have gone recently, is the onsite ticket office open? I tried booking online for june but the only times available for most days is 10:30 am and 21: 50. Don’t know if the other times are booked or if I get the tickets online, can I go anytime during the day? I’m finding conflicting or outdated info online. Thanks!

Not worth. Check roundabout from outside first, people queue up in the perimeter, if you see that, its a 1+h waiting lineup and you dont want to biy a ticket.
