Editorial Reviews
This second volume presents more of Tompall Glaser's classic 1970s outlaw sound (Vol. 1 available as BEA #16187). Tompall not only composed some great songs, but had an unfailing ear for other great songwriters. He and his brothers gave a break to Kinky Friedman, who in turn also produced a couple of songs on this CD. There are great songs from Billy Joe Shaver, and, of course, Shel Silverstein. There's a complete LP of Silverstein's songs included within Another Log On The Fire, and several other Silverstein classics on both CDs in this series. Each CD also include bonus tracks and definitive liner notes based on recent interviews with the now-reclusive Tompall Glaser.

At the time these albums were recorded, Tompall owned his recording studios, known as Hillbilly Central to the trade, and had publishing companies as well as still performing. He was a busy man. He still had time though to craft the sound he wanted, and if he didn't write as much material, he could still spot a good song.
The Shel Silverstein is a case in point. These 11 songs are by no means the greatest that Shel ever wrote. They aren't bad though, and a couple are very good indeed. Tompall knew what he was dealing with and was able by the arrangements and his wonderful voice to give the songs a weight they did not possess. Put Another Log on the Fire is a good sing along, but examine it, its not as nice as it sounds. In contrast, Oleander is given a huge lift by Tompalls performance, and its a memorable song. Echoes is a song that Tompall would have liked as it deals with lost love, a subject he wrote about throughout his career.
Tompall and his Outlaw Band fits well with the Silverstein, but the emphasis is now on the Band and its performance. A few standards are given a run through, just to show how Tompall could rework a classic, but the real standouts are the Jack Clement song West Canterbury Subdivision Blues and the Shel Silverstein When its Gone its Gone Girl. Great performances.
Bear Family has done a good job in their repackaging of these albums. In company with the first issue, My Notorious Youth, you can have all of Tompall Glasers MGM/Polydor releases and in very good sound.
Tompall Glaser went on to record for Elektra when Jim and Chuck returned to reform the Glaser Brothers. They had some big hits and the Elektra material is well worth listening to. Sadly, age, health and problems split the Brothers again as a performing unit, but at least we have their recordings.
Tompall Glaser died in August 2013 and he is missed.
