THE TINY TREE

For Ages 3+

Set in a future world where there are no trees, Matt and his dad are returning home from a space mission when their spaceship breaks down on a desolate planet. While Dad tries to repair the spaceship, Matt meets some unusual creatures and finds a bright shiny thing that he discovers is called a “seed.” He has never seen a seed before, so he wants to take it with him, but dad catches him trying to sneak it on board and explains that for the seed to grow, it must be nurtured in its right environment. With help from their new “unusual creature“ friends, they plant the seed and make sure it has the best care before zooming off to space for home. Thanks to Matt this planet now has a future.

THE TINY TREE - THE FILM

Designed by Karen Kiefer. Music by Mattea Mazella. Performed by Serina Dunham and Hermagildo Junior Tesoro. Camera by Eric West. Costume by Iris Kim. Directed & written by Annie Cusick Wood. Produced by Honolulu Theatre for Youth
The idea for The Tiny Tree was born in 2015 as a piece of theatre. Adapting the show to be a digital production gave us an opportunity to delve deeper and have even more fun using puppets," says Annie Cusick Wood, writer and director. "Climate change is a serious threat and looking after our beautiful planet is our responsibility. Planting a tiny tree, lovingly watching it grow, and nurturing it as we do our children is the idea behind this charming and funny show."

Audience members will travel to a distant galaxy where the characters, a father and son, must make an emergency landing on what seems to be an uninhabited planet. They discover a strange and magical object while fixing their rocket ship. What could it be? With the help of some newfound friends, they learn the value of looking after one another and how each of us grows in our own time. This digital production is recommended for ages 3 years and up.
