Angie Review

by Jason Ankeny

Listeners familiar with the action scores that dominate Jerry Goldsmith's career and legacy will find 1994's Angie both surprising and charming. Its nimble, lighthearted melodies are well matched to the film's sweet-natured romantic comedy. The main theme immediately serves notice that Angie is anything but a typical effort: its lithe, waltz-like melody is unique within the Goldsmith canon, employing accordion and strings in a wonderful evocation of old-fashioned romance. Though its sensitivity and intricacy at times recall Henry Mancini, the music possesses an ingenuity that's all Goldsmith. It's a shame this score isn't better known.
