Vehicle access to Barmah Island has been limited, which Parks Victoria said is due to track conditions.
“There will be limited vehicle and camping access at Barmah Island this Easter holidays as the track conditions and bank erosion pose a risk to public safety,” Parks Victoria regional director Kane Weeks said.
“Parks Victoria has done extensive work along the entire length of the Murray River and has reopened the majority of campsites and day visitor areas damaged in the floods.
“There are many other places to camp in the area, including Barmah National Park and along the Murray River Reserve from Barmah to Torrumbarry.”
Local resident Fiona Francis said Parks Victoria’s decision was done in haste and without consultation.
“This is Barmah’s biggest weekend, and they just go and block up all the gates. There has been no communication with local businesses,” she said.
"If there is a fire or an emergency, everyone’s got to get out of one gateway. That’s quite a concern.
“The other spot they’re promoting is open is the Barmah Lakes Camping Area, which is in the National Park, and you cannot take dogs. That is still quite an issue for a lot of campers that come up to Barmah.”
