Product Description
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers follow their triple-Platinum Wildflowers with this album produced by Rick Rubin. The album came about as a result of Petty's being invited to contribute a single song to the film's soundtrack. But Petty was so taken with the film that it quickly inspired a major bout of songwriting. What was supposed to be one song quickly became five and then became an entire album. Though it was inspired by the movie, this is no mere soundtrack: it's a new Tom Petty album!!!
Certified gold by the RIAA. (12/96)

An unusual move for Tom Petty to score the music for the Edward Burns's film She's the One and then still turn it into a standard Tom Petty release. The inclusions of two versions of "Walls" and "Angel Dream" make it seem more like a movie soundtrack. But, at heart, the material is more classic Petty. "Grew Up Fast" and "Hope You Never" are perfect radio songs and Petty's cover of Beck's "Asshole" proves his anti-punk stance may finally be softening with a little help from producer Rick Rubin, whose ears have given Petty his most appealing production in years. --Rob O'Connor

It's difficult to rate Petty's output because there's quite a bit and it is mostly fantastic. She's The One is certainly one of those fantastic efforts. It begins with one of my favorite Petty tracks - one of my favorite songs ever - Walls (Circus). It is poppy and beautiful with great harmony and amazing playing. It's a shame that this one doesn't play all the time on the radio because it is an amazing track and it is not the only one on this album.
Petty pulls off two very good covers (Lucinda Williams and Beck) and throws out originals that can be poppy, edgy, heavy, sentimental, beautiful, and some of them all of those. Then he throws you a curve with the jazzy Airport to close.
Angel Dream, California, the beautiful instrumental Hope On Board, Grew Up Fast, and so much more. It's catchy. It's got some great heavy guitar in places.
It's just a great album. But it kinda got lost in the Tom Petty shuffle. Understandable for a guy that has had a consistently excellent career and even hot more than he missed on his worst effort, Let Me Up (I've Had Enough).
This can be a good place to start with Petty, but it is one of many of those. I think you'll like it.
finding more each time I hear it.
She's the One has powerful lyrics and music. Powerful combinations of phrasing, timing, voices, the use of the guitars and other unusual instruments. This album shows off the virtuosity of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers . I like to listen on my headphones, and this really blows me away. All the songs are barn burners.
THanks to TP and the Heartbreakers for re- releasing this.
