Andy Warhol (amerikanisch, 1987)

Andy Warhol (amerikanisch, 6. August 1928 – 22. Februar 1987) wurde unter dem Namen Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, PA/USA geboren. Er war ein bedeutender und vielseitiger Pop-Art-Künstler. Nach seinem Abschluss in Malerei und Design am Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh zog Warhol 1949 nach New York um seiner Karriere als Werbegrafiker nachzugehen. Trotz seines Erfolgs in diesem Bereich wollte Warhol ein eigenständiger Künstler sein. Zu Beginn der 1960er Jahre begann er für seine Bilder Motive aus der kommerziellen Werbung zu verwenden. Seinen mittlerweile weltbekannten Werken wie Campbell’s Soup Cans, Disaster, Electric Chairs begegnete man zuerst mit totalem Unverständnis, doch auch die Portraits von bekannten Persönlichkeiten, wie Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy oder Elvis Presley brachten ihm seine größten Erfolge ein und werden im Kunstmarkt gefeiert. Er arbeitete für diese Werke mit Techniken wie dem Siebdruck und dem Stenciling (Druckschablonen). Sein Erfolg wuchs und wuchs und er gründete das Atelier The Factory, welches sich u.a. in der 47. Straße in New York befand. Hier drehte er einige experimentelle Filme, wie Sleep, Chelsea Girls oder Empire mit einer Gruppe von exzentrischen unbekannten Schauspielern (Underground-Talente), die er die „Superstars“ nannte. Einige seiner Filme wurden von der Polizei verboten, weil sie als zu vulgär galten. Dieser Zusammenarbeit der Künstler wurde 1968 ein plötzliches Ende bereitet. Die Frauenrechtlerin Valerie Solanas, einem ehemaligen Mitglied Warhols Künstlergruppe, verrichtete ein Attentat auf Warhol. Glücklicherweise überlebte der Künstler, ließ es von nun an aber ruhiger angehen. Er widmete sich nach dem Anschlag wieder verstärkt seinen Bildern, Siebdrucken und Portraits von Prominenten (nach 1970). Diese brachten ihm beachtliche Erfolge ein, er beschränkte sich immer mehr auf „kommerzielle“ Kunst. Er arbeitete eng mit seinem Assistenten, Gerard Malanga, zusammen und rief mit ihm das Lifestyle-Magazin „Interview“ ins Leben, welches immer noch monatlich erscheint. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit befreundeten Künstlern, wie Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente und Keith Haring kamen seine Arbeiten zu neuem Ruhm und er produzierte eins seiner letzten Werke, den Gemäldezyklus The Last Supper, für das er sich mit Leonardo da Vincis Abendmahl auseinandersetzte. 1987 verstarb Warhol überraschend aufgrund Komplikationen einer Gallenblasenoperation in New York. Ein Großteil seines Vermögens floss in die Stiftung Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts.
