He has adapted the works of many famous playwrights for the Sydney Theatre Company and the Royal National Theatre in London. In addition, his original play, 2007’s Riflemind was directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman and starred Hugo Weaving, opening to favorable reviews.
He and Blanchett have partnered together several times. In 2008, they began a five-year term as the joint artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company. The two also started their own production company together, Dirty Films, which signed a first-look deal with FX in 2020. Upton wrote, directed and produced the short film Bangers in 1999, which Blanchett starred in. He also acted as an executive producer for his wife’s movie Carol (2015).

The two have both praised their working relationship. Upton has said, “It’s great. We’ve always worked together in a way. You have your odd, ‘no, no, no, we have to do this,’ but in the end, you can say: ‘Oh, all right, I’ll fight for that next year, then. That collaborative approach is a really important part of theatre—it’s compromise that adds, not detracts.”
Meanwhile, Blanchett has commented, "It's been a great creative partnership with my husband and also a great love affair. Working together, running a creative company in Australia. It's been fantastic."

It was a late-night game of poker that would change things forever between the two. “One night we were playing poker and he was in the middle of telling me how he was attracted to a friend of mine and then we suddenly kissed, and then he asked me to marry him three weeks later.”
