Jeff M I don't curse a lot, but I'm willing to bet that 92.6% of all people who watch this fiasco will do exactly what I did - throw my hands up at the end of its blessedly short 72 minutes and yell "WTF"!!! This is an absolutely pointless exercise in nothingness. It feels as though Toback spliced together scenes from three or four different movies he was working on simultaneously in the hope of producing something the slightest bit coherent. It's one of those films that is so bad on so many levels that I began to wonder if its actual genius, and I'm not wise enough to understand its brilliance. It begins as a thriller, segues way into some kind of therapy session, morphs into a serio-comic dysfunctional family bit, and then billionaire Carl Icahn comes for a visit playing himself. Either Toback was high on illegal substances while he made this, or I was high while watching it. If any of you out there have 72 minutes to kill, please watch this and tell me what I'm missing! It's impossible for me to believe actors of this caliber were interested in something so absurd. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Terry H I don't get movies like this. I put this in the "trying to be too artsy and nuanced for their own good". I couldn't get into the plot because there was no prelude or build up for it. It's like, here's something that happened but we're not going to give you much information around it. You guess what it could all mean. And I don't know if they were trying to make an ambiguous ending, or they really thought they were tying things up. But it left me hanging with a "what the heck was that?" kind of ending. Really felt like I wasted time I'd never get back watching this movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/13/23 Full Review Charles W This movie was like drinking a wine glass full of farts. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/23 Full Review Robert R Girlfriend chose this movie last night. We broke up this morning. Seriously the worst movie I've ever seen. WTF was Carl Icahn doing here? More sadly still, his was one of the more compelling performances. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/23 Full Review Elizabeth M Disappointing. Slow and too much telling us stuff and not enough showing. The credits at the beginning were ridiculous. Quite boring. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/02/23 Full Review Jan P Boring! Acting was lackluster. I'm upset with myself for actually watching the entire movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) Just 71 minutes long, but so toenail-tweakingly pleased with itself, and so replete with pseud-ish posturing, that by the end it feels as if the whole thing must have been playing at quarter-speed. Rated: 1/5 Sep 4, 2017 Full Review Xan Brooks Guardian The Private Life of a Modern Woman is written and directed by James Toback, a once-talented iconoclast now largely fighting shadows. Rated: 2/5 Sep 4, 2017 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety "The Private Life of a Modern Woman" is a thrift-shop psychological X-ray that demands to be taken on its own Tobackian terms. But even on those terms, it spends too much time telling us things that it should be showing us. Sep 4, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews
