I always thought it was sweet when I'd hear British parents call their kids "mate" and I think Americans do it now too by calling their children "buddy" but it still doesn't sound as supportive as mate.

My dad asked me: “how old are you?” “Have you lost weight?”And “Are you making a bundle now?” It’s the most he’s managed to speak in months. I answered “yes!” to all of it just to see him smile.

A guy we know who’s a big music fan said “give my best to your husband, how’s the old man doing?” with a look of concern. “He sure did make some great music.” I told him Eric is releasing a new album in late summer, maybe his best yet. He looked amazed and said “well alright!”
