Liza Dadoly Bitch Media Overall, Amy is a stunning, beautiful, and deeply personal, if somewhat voyeuristic, portrait of one of the greatest artists of a generation. Feb 3, 2021 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Guys, after watching the 128-minute film, I can honestly say that I have never seen a documentary that has turned me off so much as this one has. Rated: D Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine Kapadia's documentary -- which uses home video, archival footage, and clips of concerts and old and new interviews -- feels a bit like a horror film, except the inescapable monster is fame. Rated: 4/4 Jun 10, 2016 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies An interesting and challenging documentary that transcends the simplicity of music or entertainment. Rated: 4/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Accessing an enormous wealth of old videos from friends and family, self-read letters of lyrics and songwriting, archived phone calls, backstage footage, media appearances, and unreleased performances, "Amy" weaves a masterful and compelling narrative. Rated: 4/5 Jun 26, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy One of the central tragedies dissected in Amy is that Winehouse loved two vile, reprehensible men -- her father and her husband -- to such a degree that she allowed them to continually use her and abuse her. Diana P This is a very well made documentary. I felt like Amy was troubled long before fame came along and her parents literally ignored her calls for help. She told her mother that she had started a new diet (I.e., bulimia) and her mother did nothing. Bulimia was one of the things that killed her. I think she was always calling for help in the largest way. Perhaps her karmic lesson was that you have to want to save yourself (with the help of trusted professionals). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/06/24 Full Review Yash B "Amy" is a fascinating and ultimately devastating documentary. Right now the discourse online I have noticed is that the Amy Winehouse biopic is necessary since this already great documentary exists. I would actually argue that if done tastefully, a biopic could be a very impactful experience and this story definitely has all of the pieces to tell something profound and moving. The way this doc uses archive footage and audio to tell a story is really impressive. I didn't know much about Winehouse before watching this outside of some high-level things, and this movie made me feel like I got to get to know her over the course of it. Overall, it is one of many cautionary tales from this world and a very well-made documentary that is engaging and a memorable experience despite being tough to watch at times. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Shael A poor storyline that did not spark admiration for Amy's story in the way that we admire her music. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/26/23 Full Review Cas C When thinking about what could have made this movie better, there was one resounding thought: "Not much." The film is an intimate review of a sorely misunderstood talent. Evocative, playful, heartwrenching, and - perhaps most importantly - true. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/23 Full Review Thomas M The best documentary movie ever made! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/27/22 Full Review Brooke L Amy is amazing, however some people around her were not genuine. I don't know if it's just context but the way some people talked about her in this documentary makes them out to be total users. She is a genuine talent gone too soon.
