Amsterdam street food delicacy: Herring

Without a doubt, the Dutch street food most frowned upon by tourists, expats, and immigrants, is herring. Squeamish tourists often assume the fish is eaten raw, but that is not the case.

Herring is the Netherland’s national snack: If you’ve never tasted fresh herring you don’t know what you’re missing.

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to eat this Amsterdam street food delicacy. The 2024 Hollandse Nieuwe — ‘New Herring’ — season starts on June 19. Hollandse Nieuwe is sold until September 30. But herring is enjoyed all year long.

Westertoren, Westerkerk

On August 10, 1943, Anne Frank — hiding in the Achterhuis — wrote, “We’ve all been a little confused this past week, because our dearly beloved Westertoren bells have been carted off to be melted down for the war, so we have no idea of the exact time, either night or day…”

So, whatever happened to the bells of the Westertoren?

Rijksmuseum — Not just Rembrandt’s Night Watch

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is the premier art museum in the Netherlands. It is the most visited museum in the country.

The Rijksmuseum is devoted to several national collections — and consists of Dutch art from the earliest moments to the 19th century. One of its most popular paintings is The Night Watch, by Rembrandt.

2024: Frans Hals exhibition: February 16 to June 9, 2024.

Dam Square, Amsterdam

Dam Square (De Dam) is Amsterdam’s historic main city square, it is also the symbolic center of the Netherlands.

Dam Square is the primary location for official events, celebrations, protests, and national commemorations.

Amsterdammers typically try to avoid the square, but if you – as a tourist – skip Dam Square, you have not really seen Amsterdam.
