AMHERST, Mass . -- Junior
Tyson Luna imitated the great escape artist Harry Houdini Monday afternoon, wiggling out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam to help the Amherst College baseball team hold on to a 10-7 victory over visiting Springfiedld College on Memorial Field.
The win improved the Mammoths record to 17-5 overall while the Pride fell to 14-13. Amherst will host M.I.T. Wednesday for its annual Pride Game. First pitch is 3:30 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst led 10-6 entering the top of the ninth, but
Christian Pedro ran into some trouble, loading the bases after an out was recorded and then forcing home the Pride's seventh run with a base on balls. That brought on Luna, and the southpaw was up for the challenge, retiring Michael Barrett on a pop up to shortstop
Ryan McIntyre for the second out and then fanning Joe Traversa - who had an earlier grand slam -- on a swinging strike three to end the game and record his first save of the season.
* Amherst trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth but rallied for three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
Jack Dove got things started with a single. He then stole second base and took third on a throwing error.
Tyler McCord worked a walk, and sophomore
Ben Smith served an RBI-single into left field to score Dove and tie the game. After a wild pitch advanced the runners,
Christian Limon came through with a clutch single to score a run and give Amherst the lead.
Jack Boyle made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to left.
* The Mammoths led 3-2 when they scored three more times in the bottom of the fifth.
Jack McDermott singled and stole second. After two quick outs, Dove connected with a fastball and drove it over the fence in left center for a two-run home run -- his fourth of the season -- and a 5-2 lead. McCord followed with a single and
Ben Smith came through once again, driving a ball the opposite way for an RBI-double to right that scored McCord all the way from first for a 6-2 lead.
* Springfield tied it in the top of the sixth when Traversa connected for a grand slam home run of Mammoth reliever
Yoon Chae . But the Mammoths re-took the lead in their half of the sixth when McDermott roped a one-out double to right and
Luke Padian came through with a two-out single through the right side that score McDermott for a 7-6 lead.
* Amherst was not done as they added three runs in the seventh to take a 10-6 lead. McCord drew a lead-off walk and took second on an errant pick-off throw. After an out, Limon doubled to center to score McCord. Boyle then ripped a single that scored Limon for a 9-6 lead.
