American Ultra is a fast-paced action comedy about Mike, a seemingly hapless and unmotivated stoner whose small-town life with his live-in girlfriend, Phoebe, is suddenly turned upside down. Unbeknownst to him, Mike is actually a highly trained, lethal sleeper agent. We need more movies like American Ultra. Now is it the best movie I've ever seen? Hell no, not even close. But that being said, it is smart, inventive and is refreshingly small-scaled, despite the somewhat "big" premise. People have been saying that the film is a combination of the Bourne films and Pineapple Express, but there are some heavy influences from films like True Romance as well, which put a big, stupid grin on my face from time to time.

Pineapple Express without the laughs and The Bourne Ultimatum without the thrills, American Ultra is a stoner action comedy that riffs on the familiar story of a guy who can’t remember that he’s actually a government-trained killing machine. Artless and unpleasant, this is the kind of late-summer swill that gives August a bad name. Directed by Nima Nourizadeh (Project X), the film stars Jesse Eisenberg as Mike, a rural Virginia convenience-store attendant with stringy hair and a weed habit. The one good thing in his otherwise meaningless existence is his endlessly patient girlfriend, Phoebe (Kristen Stewart), whose unconditional love for Mike is as inexplicable to him as it is to us.

American Ultra is cool as fuck.
Pulling no punches in terms of violence this visceral story follows a compassionate young stoner with repressed agent training for ninety minutes of carnage.
Jesse Eisenberg's character has the fighting tekkers of Bruce Lee and the execution skills of the terminator. Wonderfully confused throughout the protagonist finds himself a passenger to his actions as he becomes possessed with a unique killing ability.
The chemistry between Eisenberg and Stewart was actually quite special feeding some real emotion into the story and adding depth to the characters' relationship; similarly, the main performances were top quality conveying real poignancy at times. Unfortunately, this was hampered by some pretty awful support (I'm talking about you - Topher Grace).…

will get more into this on the podcast but this is really revealing of landis' writing style, which is brutally free-associative and stream-of-consciousness, so that every script or pitch he comes up with is just a series of successive plot events with some loose A to B shit so it feels like a story just happened. not a good movie!

It’s not often that the end credits sequence is arguably better than the actual movie but here we are. Topher Grace as always does a great job of making you want to see him get strangled, and the movie doesn’t disappoint in that regard.
