Kaminski takes a... dour, no-nonsense approach to what could be a cheerfully all-nonsense story - as if stripping junk food of its fat - and this "American Dream" dies somewhere in the impasse.

If it weren't for Kaminski's name in the credits, there'd be no way to guess that this generic crime drama was made by a multiple Oscar-winner.
