I love this theater and all of the productions I have seen here over the years. I thought I knew all I needed to know about this building until the other night when I took the elevator to the Sky Lobby Bar on the 3rd floor. I discovered the top-floor Garret Room, a private space for performances, receptions and meetings. I am so glad this building built in 1906 was saved and preserved.

Be very careful if you book seats in the upper level balcony, e.g. A10x. The front row (which you might think is a cool place to sit) has a big thick metal bar right on front of your eye level and will block your entire view unless you lean over it. Take a seat one row back.
Also the seats in the upper balcony slightly to either side of the stage are less packed and still offer a nice view.

A.C.T. is one of those SF things - if you're a local you know it's great, if you're not you'll probably miss the experience.
They do a combo of modern and non-contemporary shows, ranging from straight theater, to one-man (or one-woman) shows, to musicals. They also commission original works from time to time.
The acting is consistently good, and as long as you're not going on preview nights (when all the tightwads like to go), you've got a good chance on discounted standby or same-day half-price tickets. There isn't a bad seat in the house (that I've been in), including the last row seats on the faaaaaarrr corners.
Staging is always beautiful, directing excellent, and a consistently enjoyable experience.

I had pricey tickets for the matinee on will-call, but being from out of town, failed to reckon with horrific Sunday afternoon traffic. Unable to find parking, literally within miles, I missed the opening curtain. When I phoned the box office to request a seat at another performance I was rudely refused any accommodation whatever by a snotty, dismissive employee, even though he readily admitted there were many seats available for the very next performance!
These folks obviously do not appreciate or encourage out of town patronage. Give 'em a miss!

Every December, we include a holiday themed event in our pre-Christmas San Francisco vacation. This was our first time seeing a Christmas Carol in the City. The cast captured the magic of this traditional play and the costumes were outstanding. Thoroughly enjoyed being part of the audience festivity and cheer.

James Carpenter as Scrooge - IMPRESSIVE!!! This rendition was terrific. I enjoyed it so much I am putting it at the top of my favorite performances. Actors from all generations and backgrounds are in the Cast. All are superb. Geary Theatre is a beautiful historic building. We were in the balcony. Next visit I will pick Mezzanine or lower seats for this show. Absolutely kicks off Christmas Spirit.

The theater has a lovely facade. The bar area are welcoming and comfortable, though prices are high. Bathrooms a are clean and plentiful. The auditorium itself has great architecture to look at. Just don't sit in the balcony.
I wish I had paid more for a better seat. Every balcony chair forces you to look way way down, with people's heads and stage lights in the way. I could hear fine, great acoustics, but my neck angle was very awkward.

Performance of "A LIttle Night Music" was very good. Seating chart showed our seats on the end with no seats in front, but that was not the case. Legs very cramped, sitting with arms squashed together.

Saw a fantastic production of "The Scottsboro Boys" here.. but be warned the seating in MEZZ is very constricted. There is absolutely no leg room .. We're tall (6'3) and were on the isle and could not move our legs .. but even people around 5'8 / 5'9 were having discomfort.
It would be great if the theater removed at least a row and spaced the seating for today's audiences.

We were so looking forward to seeing a show at this theater in the Union Square area. The lobby areas are restored and modern looking. The theater is a beautiful, traditional & guilded, just lovely. I went to take a photo of the ceiling, about 20 minutes before the show was to begin, without flash, and the usher came over to me and rudely said no photos in the theater. I have traveled all over and have taken photos of many beautiful theater interiors and never was stopped before. I would never take photos during a show. I was shocked, put my camera away and tried to get the experience out of my mind. Additionally, my husband and I were quite uncomfortable in the seats. The theater looks nice at first glance but as you look more closely, the seats, the rugs, other areas are tired and worn and could use a makeover. The acting was good, but neither of us cared for the show itself, but that happens--nothing to do with liking or not liking the theater! I was in San Francisco for almost a week and the only real negative of the week that stands out is what happened at this theater, with the usher. (Had she been nice about it, that would have changed things. Being rude was a disservice to this theater and the company.)

Curious what the visibility is like in the box seats. How much of an angle is it and is there partial view of the stage?
