Track9「CAN'T LET A WOMAN」に出会えたのは、本当収穫でした!

Review based on standard LP
I am over 35 years too late in collecting Ambrosia LPs. When I was in my late teens to early 20's I had a few friends that like to collect Progressive Rock music. We were always trying to outdo each other in finding the most original music at that time in the mid-1970s. My neighbor bought the first Ambrosia LP, simply called "Ambrosia", we both listen to it, & liked the variety of the music. Mostly Progressive Rock on the softer side with a little creative Pop. Great instrumentalism, multi layered singing, & at times sounding like a cross between early Kansas & Foreigner with a touch of Todd Rundgren's wracklier moments. Now for something completely different...
With Ambrosia's 2nd release "Somewhere I've Never Travelled" they continue with their multi facet talent into modern classical music in the vein of Aaron Copland. Some reviewers write that the Copland-like music sounds like "The Fanfare of the Common Man" but I believe it's more like "Hoedown" or "Billy the Kid". Don't worry Progressive Rock fans; there is more Rock than Classical music in this LP. The most classical piece of the LP "Cowboy Star" does enter into Kansas soft progressive territory. There is also some Chopin excepts on "Dance With Me George". Other songs are late Beatles to early Foreigner in style with more talented chord structures & multi layered singing.
I believe this is one of the few USED LPs I bought through Amazon. If you normally see my reviews on LPs I normally buy USED LPs at Junk or Thrift stores while LPs purchased through Amazon are normally hard to get, Jazz, or 180 gram LPs. When I buy an USED LP I look to see if there are any scratches or warpage. This USED LP was bought from a second hand supplier through Amazon & when I took the LP out from the cover I did see 2 large scratches on side one, but I don't hear any problems during play back. WOW, they must of tested out the LP before they sold it. If only I could do that at Junk or Thrift stores.
A Progressive MUST BUY.

Ambrosia's second album was worth the wait back in the day. Their first album showed a lot of promise and this album delivered on it. It is a much-unheralded sonic masterpiece that is once again available after far too long. If you thought the vinyl sounded great back in the 70's when this album came out you'll be blown away by the digital remastering. It's an album full of the old west, show biz, the record biz, all neatly wrapped in the thematic streets of Hollywood and LA. The band loves, hates it, and depends on it for survival. Ambrosia would go on to make several more albums, all attempts at being commercially viable but none were as cohesive as this brilliant work.
I was at my old college radio station when this came out and I was suitably impressed. Finally getting this CD and listening to it in it's entirety blew me away like an old friend who looks better now than they did back when you were growing up. I highly recommend it.

An old favorite, rediscovered

Had this on vinyl, years ago, and had been looking for the reissued CD. Found it from a reseller on Amazon. This is the band's second album and it follows in the style of the band's first. Some call their music "Pop prog," which might be as apt a label as any. The selections vary from quirky ("Cowboy Star," "Dance With Me, George!") to straight ballads, ("Runnin' Away"), to conventional rockers ("Can't Let a Woman"). Perhaps their versatility prevented them from securing wide acclaim early on and led them to pursue the pop direction more in their subsequent two albums. Call it what you will, but I'd consider this one a personal favorite.

Benighted as this might sound, the first song I ever listened to in stereo on Sennheiser headsets was "Can't Let A Woman" by Ambrosia. Yup, on a 10-watt Realistic receiver in 1976 no less. I was 10 years' old.
Albeit it this was a life-changing experience. The idea, nay the technology, of stereo had been around a lot longer by 1976 than I had of course, but for me it was the sensorial equivalent of enjoying BC bud for the very first time. I forgot all my life traumas up until that kismetic moment in November and entered unqualifiedly into the Elysian Fields for an aboriginal, out-of-body, mind-expanding, spirit-melding, soul-healing experience.
Ambrosia is just that, my dearest audiophiliacs, an elixir for the senses, an emollient for the lifestuff. This CD does justice to my weathered pyrimidical foldout LP, worn but not forgotten, enabling me to more effectively relish a perfectionist's oeuvre of musicalities I might otherwise have only to deal with in a frustratingly scratchifasic, timeworn, spaceshaven, effaced milieu. God Bless Digital Media!
Get "Somewhere I've Never Travelled" by Ambrosia, my Gentlest Listener. On CD it's scratchless and flawless. Pure without being puritanical. So salvific. Good enough for this sound junkie, minus the foldout pyramid. You won't miss it. Get it.

not truly remastered

Beware - it says "original recording remastered", but what you receive when you order is the original CD release from last century. I tried ordering twice expecting to get the latest remasters (the second time going to great lengths explaining the situation), but was still sent the original CD release version, not the true "remaster". Amazon was great with the returns, but I'd go to the store if I was youze.
But 5 stars for the material.
