First Grade Math: Real-World Math Investigations

Our faculty understand that connecting students' interests to their learning supports greater engagement! First-grade boys build Big Ideas around comparative variations, transitivity, and using standard measurement. Hello, I just graduated from Allen-Stevenson. Overall, at Allen-Stevenson I received a mostly positive experience. To start, I would like to acknowledge that the educators at A-S were for the most part incredible during my time there. However, I did notice as an older student at the school that the lower division began to take a different approach, and the curriculum has most certainly evolved from when I was in the lower division. I felt as if lower division teachers had an unhealthy reliance on the use of technology and learning databases such as IXL, Khan Academy, and Edpuzzle. My upper division teachers were fantastic, however. The school has an amazing Learning Resource Center which is very helpful to students with different learning needs, and the school's placement process is also great. However, since A-S doesn't have a secondary school, I did feel like teachers were a bit too lenient with due dates and assignments which led to students developing poor habits for high school.

Review The Allen-Stevenson School

I am an alum of Allen-Stevenson and remain active with the alumni community. After more than decade, my classmates from A-S remain some of my closest friends and our class is still very connected. The school's emphasis on the "many ways to be a boy" allowed me to explore interests and activities I never would have otherwise. Just as importantly, I felt consistently throughout high school and college that A-S prepared me to achieve at a higher level than peers who had come from other K-8 schools.

Wonderful school that teaches boys how to be stand-up gentlemen with strong values. In addition to these life lessons and the shaping of moral character, the school has a rigorous academic program and robust arts and athletics. Most importantly, the school is a strong community where everyone – parents, faculty, and students alike all feel like family together.
