Product Description
One of today's most in-demand classical music personalities, English trumpeter and BBC Proms darling Alison Balsom shares her love of Paris on this new solo album. After becoming the first British woman to win Gramophone Magazine's prestigious Artist of the Year award, Alison brings her glamour, poise and dazzling virtuosity to Paris with a selection of music written in and inspired by the most romantic city in the world. Accessible yet surprising at every turn, the programme ranges from 20th-century French composers (Ravel, Duruflé, Messiaen) to jazz (Django Reinhardt) and popular chanson française (Joseph Kosma), all in enchanting arrangements for trumpet.
Review
The trumpeter Alison Balsom has been an evangelist for her instrument, commissioning new works and arranging a wide range of repertory for trumpet, often from the Baroque era. Here she goes further afield with a Parisian-themed disc featuring her arrangements (a collaboration with Guy Barker) of music by Satie, Piazzolla, Ravel and Messiaen: the arrangement of Messiaen's "Baiser de l'Enfant Jésus" is a highlight. --Schweitzer, The New York Times

Every song is good, tho i wish she would not use a ribbon mic when she records as this robs the trumpet of some brilliance and dynamics and makes it sound a bit mushy and over compressed.
She is VERY expressive and has a gentle touch which is a LOVELY addition to the canon of musical interpretation. But in the Pantheon of the "untouchable" icons of the instrument, she's just one of the mere mortals. They were of the "greatest generation" for a spectacular variety of reasons, not the least of which was having to overcome a still evolving recording technology. "Artists" today don't have that obstacle to overcome.
Three stars. Not her fault, but she's not in the firmament of the all time greats......YET.....but there are many years left in her career. I wish her the best of luck. I look forward to her Michael Hadyn, Brandenburgs and if she gets that, there's always the Russo Symphony #2 in C.

The music has been well-chosen to display the lyrical qualities of Balsom`s trumpet sound – no complex finger busters or swaggering Baroque decoration here; playing of this quality is technically demanding all by itself and the fine arrangements for trumpet and orchestra make for a satisfying, contemplative listen.
Anyone who appreciates good brass playing (or has ears and something between them) should find something to like in this selection – my only gripe is that it ends too soon.
A lovely CD offering subtle and interesting settings for Balsom`s exquisite trumpet playing. Do listen to the sound samples above if they are available; the CD has a running time of just over 52 minutes.
