A well-known motorcycle stunt rider and record-breaker has died after his bike fell short of a 150-foot practice jump in the US. Alex Harvill, 28, already held the Guinness World Record for a jump 297-foot jump.

The incident took place at Grant County International Airport, where Harvill was practicing prior to the main record attempt. It’s reported that he left the jump ramp, although did seem to have the speed to make it to the dirt landing ramp. His bike hit the front face of the landing ramp, sending him over the bars of the bike. NZ Herald also reports that on landing Harvill’s helmet came off.

Harvill was attended to by emergency medics at the scene and then transported to hospital. Sadly he later succumbed to his injuries.

An investigation is now set to be carried out this week to try and find out the cause of the accident.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to Alex's family, friends and loved ones," the Grant County Sheriff's Office said.

Harvill was aiming to break Robbie Maddison’s 351-foot record, set in 2008, and was planning to try for the record this week.

Before the tragic events of the practice jump, Harvill had spoken of his excitement at performing the stunt at the event.

"I can't believe what the airshow is doing. They have organised so many people and businesses to support me," he said.

Our thoughts go out to Harvill’s family, friends and team.
