An inspiring environment

Founded in 1457, the University of Freiburg is situated in the heart of the city. As one of the ten best universities in Germany, offering a full spectrum of disciplines at eleven faculties, we have attained many distinctions for our outstanding research and teaching in nationwide competitions. From the humanities and engineering to medicine at the University Medical Center, one of the largest medical facilities in Europe, we offer our 24,000 students as well as our numerous researchers and other employees an environment in which it is a pleasure to study, to research, and to live.

Students experience practical relevance and ideal preparation for their career both during their studies and in programs accompanying their studies. Our degree programs are theory-driven, challenging, and promote teamwork and academic culture. As a part of Eucor – The European Campus and a large worldwide network, we have an international orientation: International and intercultural experiences are integrated into our degree programs.

Researching together

At 17 scientific centers, more than 100 scientific facilities of the faculties and in numerous collaborative research centers, researchers from different disciplines are dedicated to one topic. From medieval studies or research into renewable energies to materials science and the life sciences: scientists benefit from the shared infrastructure. In addition, they cooperate in their projects with national and international non-university partners.

Living in Freiburg

Society in focus

With the transfer of ideas, knowledge, and technology, the University of Freiburg uses its expertise for the benefit of society and strengthens the exchange between science, industry, culture, politics, and the public sphere.

The University of Freiburg understands transfer as a mutual exchange and dissemination of knowledge that benefits the university, society, and industry in the same measure. This understanding of transfer does not include technological transfer alone. Following the Science Council and its extended transfer concept, we also understand transfer as the “dialogical communication and transfer of scientific findings from all fields of science to society, culture, the economy, and politics.”

The transfer at the University of Freiburg is based on three pillars:
