Newcastle, Manchester United and Chelsea final Premier League position predicted

Eddie Howe's Magpies are locked in a battle for sixth place with Man United and Mauricio Pochettino's Blues

Are the potential new spending rules a benefit to Newcastle United or not?

Eight points from Newcastle United's remaining four Premier League games could be enough to book sixth place - if results go the way of our predictions.

Eddie Howe is, of course, targetting a maximum 12 points from the final four games of the season, which would guarantee the Magpies finish ahead of Manchester United and Chelsea. That return could still see them mathematically catch Tottenham in fifth, although Spurs only need two more wins to ensure the Magpies can't overtake them.

United are currently in seventh on 53 points, one point and place behind Manchester United who are in the Europa League spot. However, Howe's men have to go to Old Trafford later this month for the rearranged fixture which is likely to have a huge bearing on which side finishes higher.

Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea still have an interest in sixth too, with the Blues holding a game in hand over their rivals, while West Ham only have three games in which to breach the gap.

Three of Newcastle's games are away from St James' Park, so it's vital they take full advantage of their final home match against Brighton a week on Saturday. Before that, it's Vincent Kompany's relegation-threatened Burnley this weekend. The Clarets have picked up form recently, but have a woeful record at Turf Moor.

Manchester United must overcome Crystal Palace - who recently beat Newcastle at Selhurst Park - and Arsenal before the Newcastle showdown at Old Trafford, with Erik ten Hag's men finishing their league campaign off with a visit to Brighton.

As for Chelsea, they still have Tottenham and West Ham to play, but could push home their game advantage when they sign off against Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Bournemouth. Predicting results is never the easiest thing to do, especially at this stage of the season, but we've given it a go here.

If Newcastle can pick up at least four points before they go to Old Trafford then they should be in a position to move ahead of Manchester United with a win. They've done it once already this season in the Carabao Cup, and while they scoreline was only 1-0 to Howe's men in the league fixture in December, the performance merited a much larger victory, so we're backing them to make it three wins over the Red Devils.

Two wins - we've said Brighton and Manchester United - plus draws at Burnley and Brentford would mean Newcastle finish on 61 points, which is probably a conservative estimate. That would mean Chelsea needing to get 14 points from their five games to overtake Newcastle. It's not inconceivable, but it would be some effort from Pochettino's men.

Manchester United would need eight points, but given that we're predicting a Newcastle win when they two meet, they would need to win all three of their others games - including against Arsenal.

In short, it really could all come down to Old Trafford on May 15. It might be time to rewatch that Carabao Cup win again . . .
