Atlanta United announce triple departure of Marcelino Moreno, Alan Franco & Dom Dwyer

Atlanta United announced the departures of three players over the weekend as Marcelino Moreno, Alan Franco, and Dom Dwyer all left the club.
The triple move is part of a wide-sweeping overhaul of the Five Stripes' roster following the arrival of new president and CEO Garth Lagerwey, who is aiming to return the club to the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2023.
1. Marcelino Moreno joins Cortiba on loan
Midfielder Marcelino Moreno has completed a move to Brazilian outfit Cortiba on loan through the 2023 season.
The 28-year-old originally joined Atlanta from Argentine side Lanus in September 2020 and went on to make 75 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing 13 assists.
However, Moreno fell out of favor under Gonzalo Pineda last season, failing to start any of Atlanta's final nine MLS matches.
“We spoke with Marcelino at the end of last year and determined the best situation for both parties was to find an opportunity for him to feature more,” Atlanta vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club press release. “This move will give Marcelino the opportunity to showcase his quality at a high level and we wish him the best this season in Brazil.”
2. Alan Franco transferred to Sao Paulo
Fellow Argentine Alan Franco also swapped Atlanta for Brazil, joining Sao Paulo on a permanent deal.
The 26-year-old center-back spent two seasons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, playing 59 games across all competitions, scoring once and providing five assists.
“Alan was a consistent contributor over the last two seasons and we want to thank him for his commitment to the club,” said Bocanegra. “This was an opportunity that arose and was beneficial for both the club and the player. We wish him continued success at Sao Paulo.”
3. Dom Dwyer contract waived
Another roster slot was opened up as Atlanta United waived the contract of Dom Dwyer.
The 32-year-old forward spent the 2022 season with the Five Stripes after joining as a free agent, scoring four goals in 22 MLS appearances. Dwyer emerged as a popular figure among supporters despite his history with Orlando City, thanks to popping up with a few important moments early in the campaign.
“We thank Dom for his contributions to the club and wish him the best in his future,” said Bocanegra.
