Badfinger started out as " The Ivey's" and the line up was Pete Ham, Tom Evans, Mike Gibbins & Ron Griffiths. The Ivey's talent was recognized & they were signed with Apple Record's a project " The Beatles" started to try & give struggling artist a helping hand & themselves their own label as well. The Beatles felt " The Ivey's" didn't sound current enough & renamed " The Ivey's after one of their song's " Badfinger Boogie" & shortened it to just " Badfinger" as well as shortening Ron Griffiths career in the band because he found himself replaced by Joey Molland!!! Poor Ron imagine having to go to work in a factory knowing the band you were formerly in were signed to " The Beatles" record label & listening to them soar up the charts with a song he helped record that had been gifted to the newly christened band " Badfinger"!!! Well Ron Griffith will alway's be connected to "Badfinger" not only for his contribution to the soundtrack " The Magic Christian" but for also having the song he penned " Dear Angie" on " The very Best of Badfinger Album/ C.D. !!! No one can fault Joey Molland for joining Badfinger & during Badfingers brief exsistance Joey Molland contributed a lot himself!!! Badfinger was a collection of 4 singer song writer's & very talented multi - Instrument playing members. After being robbed by their manager Stan Polley " Badfinger" was in turmoil... so much so that it led to founding member Pete Ham 's suicide in 1975 & after Pete Hams death Tom Evans & Joey Molland soldiered on making two more great " Badfinger " Album's/C.D.'s, basically proving " Badfinger was more than just Pete Ham. Unfortunately " Airwaves" did not receive the proper promotion it deserved, there should have been at least 3 singles pulled off this album/C.D. !!! but " Badfinger's" curse seemed to be carrying on. Tome Evans & Joey Molland would give it one more try & produce one more " Badfinger" album/ C.D. , but unfortunately Badfinger's label just didn't do much to promote the second effort either which should have produced at least one if not two solid singles!!! Many fan's consider " Airwaves" to be the last truly great Badfinger Album/ C.D. & after Tom Evans followed his band mate & song writing partner Pete Ham in committing suicide " Say No More" would be the last Badfinger Album/ C.D. made. Drummer Mike Gibbins was missing on the last two Album attempt's from former Badfinger member's in trying to make a Album/ C.D. but as far as I am aware at this point Mike & Joey finally let it go. Joey Molland would go on to make a solo album & I had heard rumor's that Mike was hitting the small venue's with his version of " Badfinger at the same time Joey was hitting small venue's with his version of " Badfinger" if there is any truth to that story they should have named their bands " Bad Taste#1" & " Bad Taste #2"!!! But I shouldn't be to hard on them every member of " Badfinger" should have been multi-millionaire's had Stan Polley not robbed them & threw them under the bus blaming all of the contractual problem's on Badfinger when the boys recorded 4 Album's worth of music ... one of the four being a double album all in 1974!!! The double album / C.D. would finally see the light of day some 27 year's after " Badfinger" recorded it!!! So Stan Polley saying the band didn't fulfill their end of the contract is crazy & Stan Polley will go down in history as the biggest thief manager of all time as long as " Badfinger's" music is played , loved & listened too!!! I hope they get into the Music Hall of Fame because they certainly deserve it " Badfinger" was a hugely talented group of four musicians!!!

Yes I was impressed with the cd it's a shame that this band has often been overlooked in the past, they were very underrated and wrote some brilliant songs. It's very sad about Pete Ham and Tom Evans tragically committing suicide over financial problems.

Badfinger never recorded any bad music.

Airwaves from 1979 was the first Badfinger album to be released without Pete Ham, who tragically committed suicide in 1975. Of course he is sadly missed on this album, which only feaures two earlier members ; Tom Evans and Joey Molland. After Pete's death the group disbanded and both Tom and Joey were in other bands.
In 1978 they felt like reuniting and drummer Mike Gibbins were also to a rehearsal before this recording. Unfortunately Mike quickly left again and he is therefore not on this album. The line-up is: Tom Evans: bas vocals; Joey Molland: guitar, vocals; Joe Tansin: lead guitar; Ken Harck: drums; Andy Newmark: drums and Nicky Hopkins: keyboards. Ken Harck left during the recording and he was replaced by Andy Newmark to finish the album. Joe Tansin left soon after the final recordings. Nicky Hopkins only work a session musician; he was not a member of the band.
The popular pop/rock music had changed during the 5 years since the last Badfinger album, so obviously the album had to be different from their earlier albums. Producer David Malloy has often been critizised for poor production on this Badfinger album. "He had not been able to find the real Badfinger-sound". I think that's an unfair and wrong concluson. Actually a lot of the album is really good. Tom Evans' songs Lost Inside Your Love and Sail Away are true highlights. Joey's Love is Gonna Come at Last is a very commercial number and it was released a single; it did not do very well, though. The Dreamer, also by Joey, is a nice ballad, a track you may not discover the first two or three times you listen to the album; but it gets better every time. Joe Tansin wrote two songs for the album; Sympathy and The Winner. Sympathy is too commercial for my taste, almost disco-like; The Winner is a rocker similar to many of Joey's songs. Tansin shows on several tracks that he's a fabulous guitarist and some of the weaker tracks are helped a lot from his guitarplaying. The original playing time was rather short, so luckily this CD version feature 5 bonus tracks of which "Send Me Some Love", "Can You Feel The Rain" and "One More Time" are very good.

So, 1979...not the greatest year for 'rock and roll'...but with the release of Airwaves, the boys proved that rock was not dead, but alive in those groovy enough to remember how to do it, and do it well. From the opening track (an acoustic snippet, leading into Look Out California) we hear vintage Tommy Evans, belting out a fabulous rocker. And it doesn't slow down there...Lost Inside Your Love has a sweet, almost 'yesterday' like string arrangement, and the vocals (and harmonies) are pure Apple-days. The best, in my opinion, are two Joey Molland tunes, Love Is Gonna Come at Last (which could be a hit today) and The Winner (actually a Tansin number, but sung by Molland)...All in all, a fab collection (with Evans' Sympathy, though a bare production, sounding very clean and punchy). And on a remastering note: it rocks. Unfortunately, the 'Apple' Badfinger catalog was marred by early 90s Abbey Road engineer Ron Furmanek's over-use of No-Noising and as a result, high end (and even low presence) suffered. Not on this release...The cymbals and voices are clean and bright (without being harsh) and the Kick drum and Tommy's bass actually are VERY audible. I'd have to say that the Tansin bonus tracks simply DON'T belong. Decent songs, but clearly recorded in the mid-80s with an Alesis Drum Machine...save for his Evans tribute "Can You Feel The Rain..." Check this one out...It won't disappoint you.
