CONSTRUCTION NEAR AIR FORCE MEMORIAL | Yesterday, the Defense Access Road and Southern Expansion Groundbreaking Ceremony was conducted near the Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.

This groundbreaking marked the start of two combined projects that support the expansion of Arlington National Cemetery by realigning the roads near the site of the Old Navy Annex, relocating the ANC Service Complex, and integrating pedestrian access to the United States Air Force Memorial. The expansion will add roughly 50 acres to the cemetery as well as 80,000 new burial spaces.

Karen Durham-Aguilera, executive director, Army National Military Cemeteries. Durham-Aguilera spoke along side Monique R. Evans, P.E., SES, Director, Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division; Karen J. Baker SES, Regional Programs Director, North Atlantic Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and Maj. Gen. Joel D. Jackson, Commander of the Air Force District of Washington.

HERO OF THE WEEK | Maj. Louis J. Sebille (November 21, 1915 – August 5, 1950)

Maj. Sebille, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. During an attack on a camouflaged area containing a concentration of enemy troops, artillery, and armored vehicles, Maj. Sebille's F-51 aircraft was severely damaged by antiaircraft fire. Although fully cognizant of the short period he could remain airborne, he deliberately ignored the possibility of survival by abandoning the aircraft or by crash landing, and continued his attack against the enemy forces threatening the security of friendly ground troops. In his determination to inflict maximum damage upon the enemy, Maj. Sebille again exposed himself to the intense fire of enemy gun batteries and dived on the target to his death. The superior leadership, daring, and selfless devotion to duty which he displayed in the ex*****on of an extremely dangerous mission were an inspiration to both his subordinates and superiors and reflect the highest credit upon himself, the U.S. Air Force, and the armed forces of the United Nations.

HERO OF THE WEEK| Lt. Col. William Schroeder (1977 - 2016)

On the morning of April 8, 2016, Lt. Col. William Schroeder, a career special operations weather officer, saw an armed individual enter his squadron. He reacted swiftly by putting himself between the armed individual and his first sergeant. After Schroeder ordered her to run, the first sergeant heard three shots fired as she bolted from the room, followed by more shots after she left.

During the intense struggle with the gunman, Schroeder suffered several significant defensive wounds prior to succumbing to a fatal shot. His swift, heroic and selfless actions prevented the perpetrator from shooting anyone else in the squadron.

Schroeder was much more than an Airman, a special operations weather officer and a commander. He was also a dedicated husband and father of two young sons.

“Bill was the finest example of commander, leader, husband, father, and friend. He was amazing in all those roles. Bill always did the right thing the right way—especially when it was a tough decision,” said Maj. Jonathan Sawtelle, who served as Schroeder’s director of operations at 10th Combat Weather Squadron. “Bill was patient, never vindictive, slow to anger.”

As an elite Air Force Special Operations Weather Officer, Schroeder led other Special Tactics Airmen in the world’s only tactically trained meteorological force.

Schroeder, who had previously earned a Bronze Star, was posthumously awarded the Airman’s Medal, given to those who distinguish themselves by a heroic act. Schroeder was laid to rest with full military honors June 16, 2016, at Arlington National Cemetery, Va.

level communications network in the Air Command and Control Center on Kabul International Airport when a single
