History of Addison

The community of Addison was originally named Dunkley’s Grove after the settler Hezekiah Dunklee, who arrived in the area in 1834. The name was changed to Addison in 1845, after a town in England or Addison, New York. Addison was incorporated as a village in 1884, with a population of 400.

Addison has a long tradition of education and culture. In 1864, the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod moved its teacher training to the village from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and established the Addison Teachers Seminary, which later became Concordia University Chicago. Addison also hosted the Adventureland amusement park in the 1960s and 1970s, which featured rides, games, and shows.

Addison has grown and developed over the years, becoming a major industrial and commercial center in the region. Addison is home to many businesses, including Pampered Chef, United Feather and Down, and The Truss Company.
