In Memory of Adam McKay
The world of basketball and social activism has lost a true pioneer with the passing of Adam McKay. Adam passed peacefully on the afternoon of April 17 after a short battle with stage 4 brain cancer. Adam used basketball as a vessel to break down barriers, foster inclusivity, and create meaningful change. His legacy, deeply rooted in advocacy and empowerment, continues to inspire countless individuals.
One of Adam’s remarkable contributions was the founding of Helping Hoops, an organisation that revolutionised access to basketball for children and young people. His vision was simple yet powerful: break down barriers and provide children and young people with opportunities to participate in after-school activities.
Helping Hoops and Adam’s vision continues today, running 15 free programs weekly across 11 locations, impacting countless lives through the joy of basketball. Adam’s dedication to this cause was unwavering, evident in the program’s partnerships with esteemed entities like Ben Simmons, Nike, Melbourne United and the Deakin Melbourne Boomers, further amplifying its reach and impact.
Throughout his time at Helping Hoops, Adam discovered the impact of visual storytelling, and fell in love. His journey for better change through basketball continued through his groundbreaking docuseries, ‘Sidelined: The Fight for Equality in Women’s Basketball’. The four-part series followed the Deakin Melbourne Boomers’ 2021-22 WNBL Season, capturing the struggles and triumphs of female athletes in the face of gender inequality, lower pay, racial discrimination, and societal pressures. Through visual narratives, Adam gave voice to these critical issues, igniting conversations and sparking change within the sporting landscape.
‘Sidelined’ wasn’t just a documentary; it was a movement. Premiering in 2022, the series garnered accolades and recognition, including a nomination for Best Sport Profile at the ASC Media Awards. Adam’s ability to merge sports with social advocacy showcased his unparalleled talent for using storytelling as a catalyst for transformation.

Following the success of ‘Sidelined’, Adam continued to push creative boundaries as the Head of Brand and Digital for Deakin Melbourne Boomers. His innovative approach and unwavering commitment to driving positive change earned him respect and admiration within the sports community and beyond.

As we mourn his physical absence, we celebrate the indelible mark he has left on hearts and minds, both as a devoted family man to his wife Yuki and a doting father to his daughters Naomi and Lindsay, and as a cherished friend, trusted colleague, and mentor to many. His warmth, empathy, and unwavering support have inspired and guided countless individuals, fostering a community of passionate changemakers and storytellers who will continue to carry forward his spirit and impact for generations to come.
