Suncorp Stadium turns 20!

June 1st, 2023, marks 20 Years of Suncorp Stadium since its redevelopment in 2003 and opening game between the Brisbane Broncos and Newcastle Knights.

To celebrate the milestone, the birthday month of June will be dedicated to honouring 2 unforgettable decades of exhilarating sporting events, concerts and memories. Suncorp stadium is inviting all fans to join in on the ultimate showdown, where the best moments in its 20-year history will battle it out for the ultimate crown.

Presented below is a carefully curated collection of 20 iconic moments and events that have taken place at Suncorp Stadium and left an enduring mark on the stadium's legacy.

Throughout the 20-year anniversary week - Thursday June 1st - 8th - fans will cast their vote for their favourite Suncorp Stadium moment to determine which best 8 will survive and make it to through to the finals. 

The Battle of Best Moments Finals
will then unfold on in a Top 8 playoffs bracket format over on Suncorp Stadiums
Facebook and Instagram. Fans will again vote on their favourite moment from head-to-head match-up posts between the top 8 memorable moments via the comments section. As each round progresses, the stakes will heighten, propelling the best moments as voted by fans to the subsequent playoff stages. Ultimately, it will be the fans votes that decide which events advance until the grand final is reached, where the ultimate champion and best moment in 20 years will be crowned.

20 MOMENTS:

Suncorp Stadium’s First game - Broncos v Knights

The newly redeveloped Suncorp Stadium hosted its first-ever event on Sunday, June 1st, 2003, where Brisbane Broncos took on the Newcastle Knights. The match showcased the talents of Darren Lockyer, Gorden Tallis, Shane Webcke, and Petero Civoniceva for the Broncos, while the Knights had Andrew Johns, Danny Buderus, and Timana Tahu, with Wayne Bennett and Michael Hagan as coaches. With a massive crowd of over 46,000 fans in attendance, the Knights emerged victorious with a convincing 32-22 win over the Broncos.

NRL Grand Final 2021

On Sunday 3rd October 2021, Suncorp Stadium hosted the NRL Grand Final between Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs. This marked the first time in the competition's history that the event was held at Suncorp Stadium, as it was relocated from Sydney due to an ongoing COVID-19 lockdown in New South Wales. The match concluded with a victory for Penrith, who secured a 14-12 win, earning their third premiership title and their first since 2003.

Ed Sheeran back-back-back concerts 2023

Suncorp Stadium hosted three Ed Sheeran +-=÷x Tour concerts on Friday 17th, Saturday 18th, and Sunday 19th February 2023. The concert was the first ever held ‘in the round’ with a centre field stage and seating in all areas of the venue as well as on field.

Queensland Reds 2011 Super Rugby Win 

On Saturday 9th July 2011, the 2011 Super Rugby Final, was played at Suncorp Stadium between the Queensland Reds from Australia and the Crusaders from New Zealand. It was momentous occasion in Reds, winning the title, beating the Crusaders 18-13 in front of a packed-out stadium of 52,113 fans which at the time was a record crowd for Super Rugby in Australia. The Reds team coached by Ewen McKenzie and captained by James Horwill, featured the likes of Quade Cooper, Digby Loane and Will Genia, who in the end was ultimately crowned Man of the Match.

3 x  Orange Sundays for Brisbane Roar - A-League Grand Final Wins

2011 - The Brisbane Roar made history at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday 13th March 2011, winning their first A-league title against the Central Coast Mariners in a tight 2-2 match decided by a penalty shootout in front of a record Queensland A-league crowd.

2012 - A year later on Sunday 22nd April 2012, more history was made with another Orange Sunday at Suncorp Stadium when the Brisbane Roar came out victorious in their grand final match against Perth Glory, making them the first A-League team in history to win back-to-back titles.

2014 - On Sunday 4th May 2014, Brisbane Roar became the first team to win three Hyundai A-League championships after they defeated the Western Sydney Wanderers 2-1 in extra time at Suncorp Stadium.

Billy Slater's Famous Origin Try

Billy Slater’s chip and chase try in the 2004 State of Origin Game II at Suncorp Stadium is considered one of the greatest Origin moments of all times. On Channel Nine's commentary, Paul Vautin called it "one of the greatest State of Origin tries you will ever see" as Slater timed his run inch perfect. Queensland went on to win the game 22-18, a Maroons victory at home never to be forgotten.

​2003 Rugby World Cup

In October and November 2003, the 2003 Rugby World Cup was hosted by Australia where Suncorp Stadium held nine matches in the tournament. The ultimate title was won by England defeating Australia in the Final at Sydney to claim the Webb Ellis Cup.

QLD Maroons Record Win 52-6

On Wednesday 27th of June 2015, Suncorp Stadium held Game III of the 2015 State of Origin series where Queensland equalled their record for highest State of Origin score of 52-6 and broke the record for largest winning margin in State of Origin history. Ath the time, the match achieved the highest ever attendance at Suncorp Stadium, with a crowd of 52,500 people in attendance. Also, Queensland captain Cameron Smith made his 36th Origin appearance, drawing level with Darren Lockyer for most appearances for Queensland whilst Johnathan Thurston scored 18 points, equalling Lote Tuqiri's for most points in a single match by a Queenslander, kicking 9 goals from 9 attempts.

André Rieu's World Tour 2008

On Wednesday 3rd & Thursday 4th December 2008, Andre Rieu held back-to-back concerts at Suncorp Stadium during his 'World Stadium' tour. A homage to a 'romantic Viennese night’ featuring an incredible orchestra, André’s concert is still one of the best performances to have graced the field at Suncorp Stadium. His set made it particularly special - a life-size replica of Vienna’s Schonbrunn Castle - the world's largest stage constructed for the tour.

Rugby League World Cup Men's & Women's Finals

On Saturday 2nd December 2017, Suncorp Stadium hosted the 2017 Rugby League World Cup Men's and Women's Finals. Australia triumphed in the Women's Final against New Zealand with a score of 23-16, securing their second World Cup victory in history. In the Men's Final, Australia emerged victorious once again, defeating England 6-0 to claim a record 11th Rugby League World Cup title, becoming the first team since 1977 to win the tournament on home soil.

Dolphin's Inaugural NRL Game 2023

On Sunday March 10th, 2023, the new Dolphins ran out their Inaugural NRL game against the Sydney Roosters during Round 1 of the 2023 NRL season at Suncorp Stadium. This momentous occasion marked a significant milestone for the club, as they became the newest expansion team to join the NRL competition. The great day was topped off with a victorious 28–18 Dolphins win in front of a crowd of 32,177 fans. Jesse Bromwich captained the side with the master Wayne Bennett as coach, whilst Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow scored the Dolphins first points and Felise Kaufusi was awarded the Artie Legacy Medal for Player of the Match.

Belinda Sharpe the First Female NRL Referee

On Thursday 18th July 2019, Suncorp Stadium played a special part in women’s sporting history when Belinda Sharpe became the first woman to referee a full NRL match. Belinda officiated the Round 18 clash between the Brisbane Broncos and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs alongside Ben Cummins.

Liverpool FC visits Suncorp Stadium

On Friday 17th July 2015, Suncorp Stadium welcomed Liverpool FC for a pre-season clash with the hometown Brisbane Roar side. Liverpool produced a 2-1 victory, coming back from an early goal scored by Brisbane Roars winger Dimi Petratos in the 17th-minute with goals struck by Liverpool’s mid-fielders Adam Lallana and James Milner. The night was topped off with Liverpool’s famous ‘‘You’ll Never Walk Alone" ringing out amongst the 50,000+ crowd of fans.

Battle of Brisbane: Horn v Pacquio

On Sunday 2nd July 2017, all eyes were on Suncorp Stadium as local legend Jeff Horn defeated Manny Pacquiao to claim the WBO Welterweight Title in epic boxing match billed as ‘The Battle of Brisbane’. In front of a huge 51,052 crowd of fired up boxing fans, Horn won the hard-fought fight via controversial unanimous decision when the three judges scored it 117–111, 115–113, 115–113 in his favour.

Radike Samo's Famous Wallabies Try

On Saturday 27th August 2011, the 2011 Try Nations Final played at Suncorp Stadium between the Wallabies and All Blacks delivered one of the greatest Wallabies tries scored by Radike Samo. Late in the first half, Samo got the ball at first receiver on Australia’s 10-metre line and charged 50 metres straight down the middle of the Suncorp Stadium pitch to score beside the posts. The Wallabies went on to win the match 25-20 to secure the 2011 Try Nations Championship.

NRL Magic Round 

The Inaugural NRL Magic Round held at Suncorp Stadium from May 10-12, 2019, marked the first time that all 16 teams from the NRL played at a single location over a full round of fixtures. The event attracted a massive attendance of over 134,000 fans across the 3 days, making it one of the most highly attended rugby league gatherings in recent memory. Since the inaugural round, Suncorp Stadium has gone on to host the massive event on three more occasions - 2020, 2022 and 2023 with it ready to return again in 2024!

Nitro World Games 2022 

On Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd of October 2022, Suncorp Stadium played host to the Nitro World Games. The extreme-sporting tournament featured elite athletes from across the globe who specialise in FMX, BMX, skateboarding and scooter, pushing the limits with record-breaking attempts and battling it out for championship honours.

First Ever Concert: Robbie Williams

On Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th December 2006, Suncorp Stadium held its first concerts since its redevelopment with British Singer Robbie Williams playing two full house shows a part of his ‘Close Encounter’ tour. The Stadium has since gone on to hosting numerous world-class performers and their touring shows including the likes of Taylor Swifts ‘The Red’ Tour in 2013 and ‘1989 World Tour’ in 2015, Paul McCartney ‘One on One’ Tour in 2017 and Elton John ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ Tour in 2023.

Suncorp Stadium's 20 Millionth Patron

On Saturday 11th April 2023, Suncorp Stadium welcomed its 20 millionth patron through the turnstiles as they attended the Brisbane Broncos v Canberra Raiders game. The lucky patron was surprised at the gates and given an exclusive pre-game sideline tour before a special on-field presentation gift at half-time with Deputy Premier the Hon Dr Steven Miles, Brisbane Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy, Suncorp Stadium General Manager Alan Graham and Broncos legend Corey Oates.

"Worst QLD team ever" Origin Win 2020

On Wednesday 18th November 2020, Queensland pulled off an incredible 20-14 State of Origin Game III win over the Blues, securing the series with a team made up of multiple debutants led by the master coach Wayne Bennett. After being publicly dubbed the worst Queensland team ever by many media personalities, Cherry-Evans was sure to put them in their place after the victory in his acceptance speech saying “Thank you to everyone in the stadium, this is the best stadium in the world... And on behalf of the worst ever Queensland team, thank you very much”.
