This sounds absolutely amazing.
Please give it a good cleaning before you listen. Got a near mint almost flawless copy. But there was a lot of surface noise in various parts: in quiet and louder parts.
Once I gave a few cleans and a few more play throughs, it really sounded fantastic.
Very clear.referencing Acquiring The Taste (LP, Album, Stereo) 6360 041
This pressing from vertigo is without the standard swirl design on label . Sound mastering is indeed good . I have not tried the 1st uk https://www.discogs.com/release/1048486-Gentle-Giant-Acquiring-The-Taste but no regrets with this. A good prog rock collection .- Very positive impact: impressive detail, great dynamics and well-defined voices, unlike my old reissue from the 80s. I don't know the first pressing but I agree with the other positive comments on this edition. The vinyl, after cleaning, is quiet: an excellent pressing of what I consider to be the best GG album.
- My copy's got backround noise from start to finish, but only when the music plays and not in the quiet parts. This record (and many others nowadays) comes with a kind of "dull" surface which is shown when you try to clean it with a carbon brush. The surface is not smooth so the brush can stop the record from turning. Don't know if that is a pressing issue or a problem with the material that was used. Fed up with issues like this and returned the record.
- Different version than Matrix / Runout: VEL-1005-A-2 and Matrix / Runout: VEL-1005-B- with (London Records of Canada (1967) Ltd. 6265 Côte de Liesse, St-Laurent, Québec H4T1C3) written on right bottom of the back cover.
This version (1973) has different Matrix/Runout: VEL-1005-A-2 J.C and Matrix/Runout: Side 2:VEL-1005-B-2 J.C with (Distributed in Canada by London Records of Canada (1967) Ltd. Printed in CANADA) written on right bottom of the back cover. This version is older than VEL-1005-A2 London Records had not yet moved to rue Côte de Liesse - Edited 2 years agoSoundwise this reissue doesn't have the depth of the first one which I hold as a '73 press.
Not disappointing, but not anywhere near the real thing. - Like a lot of Progressive Rock this did not age well. I saw Gentle Giant at Massey Hall 1970-71 till this day the best live show I have seen and trust me I have seen a lot live shows. Their live show skills never made it into the studio.
