The debut album of the man who produced so many great albums, U2's Joshua Tree and Unforgettable Fire, Bob Dylans No Mercy and Time Out of Mind, Robbie Robertson's debut album (great album), Emmy Lou Harris Wrechking Ball, Peter Gabriel's Us, just to name a few. Acadie is very Canadiana, not only because Daniel sings in French and English, mostly English, but for the name dropping of familiar (to Canadians) references mostly to eastern provinces and cities, Montreal, Quebec, Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, like he's going down memory lane back to his youth and where he grew up. It's a mystical album in many ways with wide landscapes, much like the country side outside of Canadian cities. It's very sparse and guitar centric in places. The Neville Brothers help out on this album, Aaron Neville singing the last song "Amazing Grace" the only song Daniel Lanois didn't write on Acadie, and the production of that traditional is given that different Lanois treatment. It's almost like Lanois watches alot of movies like Paris Texas or David Lynch movies with his moody mystical soundtrack like song writing and producing, which are just as much about the production as the bare bones of songwriting. U2's drummer Larry Mullen Jr. and bass player Adam Clayton keep the timing on Acadie.
An album I can see some wouldn't like but Daniel Lanois, to me at least, has always been a very creative producer the way he develops and builds songs, into what is the final product, which he has done on my successful albums he's produced. I like his style and his own albums are not as dynamic but ghostly and cinematic in their own way.

Recorded in New Orleans where lanois had just worked on the new Dylan and neville brothers records (most of the musicians here worked on both those albums)
The atmospheric, ambient folk and at times gospel influenced 'acadie' is tastefully performed but straddles the line between relaxing and boring too much for its own good at times. It does have some fine moments though despite the mixed French/English vocals sounding too in thrall of Bono.

There are four superb songs on this recording in the folk vein including the first two tracks, "Jolie Louise" and "Under a Stormy Sky". Others are pleasant enough with a simple acoustic guitar over a subtle ambient synthesized sound scape which is pleasing but not very challenging.

I remember that I judged this one to be pretty boring when I bought it back in 1995.
It only made it to my player again because Black Dub are currently touring Germany, and I just bought a ticket for one of their shows. So I saw this record as an opportunity to get into Daniel Lanois music a bit deeper before the concert.
And I have to say, it isn't bad at all. Obviously my pretension has changed a bit. This is a pretty good record, very relaxing, with mixed french and english vocals by Daniel Lanois himself, and some outstanding tracks like "The Maker" and the cover of "Amazing Grace". Which has been changed from the original nearly into unrecognizable condition, but gets a very mystic touch thereby.
In some parts it has also a strong and very welcome ambient touch, due to the heavily delayed guitars and maybe also due to the presence of Brian Eno in the musician list.

U2, Bob Dylan and Peter Gabriel's producer is also a singer. Well, the result is not bad, polished, hedonistic and atmospheric as we could imagine it. However, for some U2's sound lovers, the album may seem like U2 for the poor because Lanois's voice is just ok and a few songs are plain.

A friend of mine turned me onto Daniel Lanois, after hearing someone else do a version of the Maker, and I am so glad they did.
Wonderful songs, a mixture of New Orleans rhythm, folk, and amazing production, that takes you right there.
Stand out tracks
The Maker (featuring Aaron Neville)
Jolie Louise
Under A Stormy Sky
Great album, one of the best in my collection that I can come back to again and again.

If you're buying this album for "The Maker" (like I did) then saddle up for a giant disappointment. A great song does not make a great album.

He has a nice voice and the lyrics are great on this one. There are also collaberations with U2 and Aron Neville (Neville Brothers) on it. Very laid back but very intens at the same time.
