Oscars 2017: The Jungle Book wins Best Visual Effects

The visual effects team behind The Jungle Book can forget about their worries and their strife; the live-action remake of the 1967 Disney classic has won the Oscar for best visual effects at the 89th annual Academy Awards on Sunday in Los Angeles.

The Jon Favreau-directed film, which raked in nearly $365 million at the box office, relied almost solely on CGI to reimagine the tale of Mowgli, an orphaned human boy who comes of age under the guidance of animal guardians, including wolves, a bear, and a panther.

Neel Sethi, the child actor who played Mowgli, was the lone human in the cast. The rest of the characters, including Idris Elba's Shere Khan and Christopher Walken's King Louie, were made entirely of special effects created by Robert Legato, Adam Valdez, Andrew R. Jones, and Dan Lemmon, as was the Indian jungle setting.

The Jungle Book, which has already gotten the go-ahead for a sequel, beat out Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for the prize.
