“American Sniper,” the Chris Kyle story that’s topped $300 million in box office earnings, managed to grab an Academy Award pat on the back — for sound editing.
Alan Robert Murray and Bub Asman accepted the statue for their work on the Clint Eastwood-directed film. They’re two-time Oscar winners and beat out several other top-tier candidates for the award, including Becky Sullivan and Andrew DeCristofaro for “Unbroken,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
But even that humble nod didn’t go over well with some at the ceremony. Twitchy.com reported that some views of the show noticed one actor — Jason Bateman — who seems to snub “American Sniper.”
Matt Oswalt tweeted: “[E]very celeb in the room is looking at their PR rep to see if applauding for American Sniper will hurt their ‘brand.’ “
And Chad Williams followed that with the tweet: “Jason Bateman didn’t clap.”
Caleb Howe noticed Mr. Bateman’s failure to clap, too, tweeting: “I was line [sic] at time, but did anyone else think Jason Bateman pointedly refused to applaud American Sniper? Maybe he hates desert movies,” Twitchy.com reported.

Other nominated pictures in the best sound editing category included “Birdman,” “The Hobbit” and “Interstellar.”
The best picture award went to “Birdman.”
