Oscars 2017 winners: See the full list

The 89th annual Academy Awards ending with the most shocking moment in Oscars history: La La Land was announced as best picture — only the actual the winner was Moonlight.

After the show’s final presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read all nine best picture nominees, Dunaway read that La La Land had won best picture. The La La Land team started celebrating on stage and giving acceptance speeches, but they were interrupted when it was revealed that Moonlight had actually won.

Not only was the win a shock because of the mistake, but it also stood as a major upset: La La Land was the heavy favorite for best picture and had won six awards on Oscars night: best actress for Emma Stone, best director for Damien Chazelle, best original song (for “City of Stars”), best score, best production design, and best cinematography.

Heading into the night, Chazelle’s boisterous musical led all films with 14 nominations, tying it with 1950’s All About Eve and 1997’s Titanic for the most nominations received by a single film in Oscars history. The Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone two-hander — about a couple of artists falling in and out of love against the backdrop of sunny Los Angeles — was expected to dominate the conversation inside the Dolby Theatre.

But it was Moonlight that walked away with the night’s biggest honor, best picture, in addition to two other Oscars: best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali and best adapted screenplay for Jenkins and playwright Tarell Alvin McCranley.

Before the calamity of the ending, the show had gone off mostly as expected, with Manchester by the Sea winning two major awards, best actor for Casey Affleck and best original screenplay for Kenneth Lonergan, and Viola Davis taking home Fences.

Other winners included O.J.: Made in America for best documentary, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for best costume design (the first-ever Oscars win for a Harry Potter film), Suicide Squad for best makeup, The Salesman for best foreign language film, and Zootopia for best animated feature. Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge was a surprise winner of two Oscars: best sound editing and best editing.
