How wonderful to finally have the Diversions album on CD, alongside a number of single sides. The album, built to capitalise on the Abergavenny single (a hit in many territories but, oddly, not the UK), features fourteen originals co-written by Wilde, and with a very different sound to his better known hits from ten years earlier. These have that late 1960s sound, aligning them more with The Loving Spoonful, The Monkees, and The Turtles more than the traditional Wilde recordings. Listening to them, they also remind of the two late 60s albums by Rick Nelson (Another Side of Rick and Perspectives). And Teensville have managed to release this most summery of music in the middle of a British heatwave, so what better time to open the windows, turn up the volume, and sing along with the completely bonkers but addictive title song of this collection, Abergavenny.

This really is fine music that deserves to be much better known and is, for the most part, really great fun!

I came across this a while ago when I heard Abergavenny which I vaguely remembered during a music search. The album is great if like me you’re into obscure late 60/70s music. Marty wrote some major hits in his time even though he was out of fashion as a singer by the late 60s. It’s a little gem that’s well worth checking out. The sound quality does vary a little as mentioned in the notes but not enough to spoil the album.

I love the Diversions album which is long overdue on cd and the singles added from 1966 which showcase a highly underrated singer and truly gifted writer. Who is still touring today.

I am leaving 4 stars only for the fact that it's a shame the album isn't from original stereo masters (as the singles would then be) and to my ears the mastering seems to be a bit on the top/treble side with very little underlying bass. That's not to decry the contents in any way, the accompanying 8 page sleeve notes are informative.

Baroque pop with hints of psych

I’m not really a fan of the pre-Beatles British pop scene, with the exception of the weirder Joe Meek stuff. But this Marty Wilde is different - this album is filled with baroque pop that on occasion sounds like a British Scott Walker, no accident since Walker producer Johnny Franz is involved. There are hints of psych pop at times too, the track Alice in Blue is slightly Zombies-esque or like a British Left Banke. If all of this sounds up your alley, you won’t be disappointed. Wilde wrote or co-wrote (with Ronnie Scott) the majority of the tunes here, too. A really neat package, a very very pleasant surprise.
