Harvey Weinstein Hospitalised After 2020 Rape Conviction Overturned

HOLLYWOOD producer Harvey Weinstein, whose 2020 rape conviction was overturned earlier this week , has been hospitalized. Weinstein is currently in custody at New York City’s Bellevue Hospital, Patrick Rocchio, a rep for The New York City Department of Correction, had told USA TODAY.

Weinstein’s attorney Arthur Aidala too confirmed he was undergoing care at Bellevue Hospital in New York City after examinations were conducted at city jails. Aidala had referred to Weinstein’s health as “train wreck.”

A New York appeals court had recently overturned Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction, after the court discovered that the judge for the 2020 trial had given improper rulings.

The trial had fueled the #MeToo movement and triggered a broader inspection within the entertainment industry and media. Following a long trial in 2020, Weinstein was convicted of rape and also sentenced to 23 years in prison.

However, in a 4-3 decision on Thursday, the New York court ruled for a new trial for Weinstein. Despite this, he remains incarcerated, serving a 16-year prison term from a separate 2022 California rape conviction.

“We will do everything in our power to retry this case and remain steadfast in our commitment to survivors of sexual assault,” Emily Tuttle, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s spokesperson, told Reuters in an email.

A series of reports in 2017 talked about detailed allegations from several women who were raped and sexually assaulted by  Weinstein. These reports helped many other women to talk about similar cases by powerful men in Hollywood and beyond.
