CELTIC ace Aaron Mooy earned rave reviews as Australia battled to a 1-0 win over Tunisia for their first win at the World Cup in Qatar.

The Parkhead midfielder was in the heart of the Socceroos line-up and put in a tireless display to help his side to victory in Group D.

Mitchell Duke's excellent header in the first-half was enough to take the win for Graham Arnold's side with a number of Scottish-based players in action.

Dundee United's Aziz Behich was in defence from the start alongside Hearts centre-back Kye Rowles who was another standout partnered with Scottish-born Harry Souttar.

St Mirren's Keanu Baccus was also handed a cameo appearance in the win - with injured Martin Boyle joining huge celebrations at full-time.

And Mooy was showered with praise after the match with both Alex Scott and Aussie legend Mark Schwarzer impressed with his display.

On the resolute defensive showing to take the win, pundit Scott commented: "Every single Australian player knowing and putting their heart on the line. The blocks, getting it, we've highlighted Mooy just sniffing out danger.

"This is doing all the ugly stuff, the hard work when your legs are tired, when your head is fatigued as well but it is just making sure nothing is going to go against you."

And Schwarzer branded Mooy "brilliant" as he hailed his stunning form for the national team going back to a difficult period in China before his move to Celtic.

"Aaron Mooy has been brilliant," raved Schwarzer. "He is someone who went to China, didn't play football for six months because of Covid and trying to get away from the club.

"Then in the World Cup qualifiers he was so important to us - through 120 minutes he was sensational and here now put in another unbelievable performance."

Co-commentator Danny Murphy was similarly excited by Mooy's performance as he also lavished praise on Souttar who was colossal in defence.

He said: "He's (Souttar) like Superman back there, considering he hasn't played in all that time as well, its tremendous isn't it?

"And I'm glad I don't have to name a man of the match as Mooy and Souttar, how can you choose?

"They have given absolutely everything.

"Just another mention for those two, Souttar and Mooy, performances of their lives.

"It's an amazing day for the Australians."
