Lots of posts on the internet about where to see sakura in spring and leaves in autumn, even winter. But what about summer? Sure it's hot, but where can I go to capture that Japanese summer feeling -- lush greenery, sun filtering through leaves, chirping insects, maybe even fireflies? Tokyo is probably too crowded for this but anywhere that can be reached for a day trip, or some outer neighbourhoods?

Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

In Tokyo, Kiyosumi Garden is lovely in summer. It definitely is lush and green, and turtles bask on rocks in the pond while dragonflies flit about.

Kamakura is another great summer destination, particularly when the hydrangeas are flowering. There are also nice walking trails through the trees.

Nikko and Kamakura are popular side trips for visitors to Tokyo, and for good reason. For more of a beach experience, there's Atami.

Enoden is a fun train line that takes you to the coast. Several stops along the way have things to see. Several shops and restaurants, but casual feel. You can buy one ticket to get on and off the train as many times as you wish throughout the day.
