Notes
  1. ^ Location: Countries, territories, and international conveyances where cases were diagnosed. The nationality of the infected and the origin of infection may vary. For some countries, cases are split into respective territories and noted accordingly.
  2. ^ Cases: This number shows the cumulative number of confirmed human cases reported to date. The actual number of infections and cases is likely to be higher than reported.[9] Reporting criteria and testing capacity vary between locations.
  3. ^ Deaths: Reporting criteria vary between locations.
  4. ^ Recoveries: May not correspond to actual current figures and not all recoveries may be reported. Reporting criteria vary between locations and some countries do not report recoveries.
  5. ^ The worldwide totals for cases, deaths and recoveries are taken from the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. They are not sums of the figures for the listed countries and territories.
  6. ^ United States
    1. Figures include cases identified on the Grand Princess.
    2. Figures do not include the unincorporated territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Marian Islands, and U.S Virgin Islands, all of which are listed separately.
    3. Not all states or overseas territories report recovery data.
    4. Cases include clinically diagnosed cases as per CDC guidelines.[10]
    5. Recoveries and deaths include probable deaths and people released from quarantine as per CDC guidelines.[11][12][13]
    6. Figures from the United States Department of Defense are only released on a branch-by branch basis since April 2020, without distinction between domestic and foreign deployment, and cases may be reported to local health authorities.[14]
    7. Cases for the USS Theodore Roosevelt, currently docked at Guam, are reported separate from national figures but included in the Navy's totals.

By continent

As a result of COVID-19 many regions have imposed lockdowns, curfews and quarantines alongside new legislation and evacuations, or other restrictions for citizens of or recent travelers to the most affected areas.[364] Other regions have imposed global restrictions that apply to all foreign countries and territories, or prevent their own citizens from travelling overseas.[365]

Africa

  100–999 confirmed cases
  1,000–9,999 confirmed cases

  100,000+ confirmed cases

The pandemic was confirmed to have spread to Africa on 14 February 2020, with the first confirmed case announced in Egypt.[366][367] The first confirmed case in sub-Saharan Africa was announced in Nigeria at the end of February.[368] Within three months, the virus had spread throughout the continent, as Lesotho, the last African sovereign state to have remained free of the virus, reported a case on 13 May.[369][370] By 26 May, it appeared that most African countries were experiencing community transmission, although testing capacity was limited.[371] Most of the identified imported cases arrived from Europe and the United States rather than from China where the virus originated.[372] It is believed that there is widespread under-reporting in many African countries with less developed healthcare systems.[373]

New strains of the virus were found in December 2020 in South Africa and Nigeria, in addition to the Lineage B.1.1.7 variant reported in the United Kingdom in September.[374]

The government of Egypt denied January 2021 allegations that the shortage of oxygen had killed several COVID-19 patients at one of its hospitals. However, an investigation led by The New York Times confirmed that the authorities had lied. The video of one of Egypt's hospitals treating critical patients using manual ventilation methods went viral on Facebook. The video was posted by Ahmed Nafei, the nephew of a 62-year-old woman who died. In addition, the relatives of the dead patients and the El Husseineya Central Hospital's medical staff also confirmed in an interview given to The New York Times that the cause of death had been the shortage of oxygen.[375]

Asia

COVID-19 deaths per million residents as of 10 December 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic began in Asia in Wuhan, Hubei, China, and has spread widely through the continent. As of 30 April 2020,[376] at least one case of COVID-19 had been reported in every country in Asia except North Korea and Turkmenistan.

Excluding Russia (a transcontinental country), the Asian countries with the highest numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases are India, Turkey, Iran, and Indonesia.[377] Among the earliest countries to report COVID-19 cases after the outbreak in mainland China were Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, but these states (except Japan) has successfully controlled the pandemic as compared to Europe and North America.

As of mid-February 2021, the highest numbers of deaths are recorded in India, Iran, Indonesia, Turkey, Iraq, and Pakistan with more than 300,000 deaths combined. However, the death tolls in a number of countries[which?] are claimed to be significantly higher than those given in official figures.[378][379]

Europe

Deaths per million residents as of 2 January 2021

As of 13 March 2020, when the number of new cases became greater than those in China, the World Health Organization (WHO) began to consider Europe the active centre of the pandemic.[380][381] Cases by country across Europe had doubled over periods of typically 3 to 4 days, with some countries (mostly those at earlier stages of detection) showing doubling every 2 days.[382]

As of 17 March, all countries within Europe had a confirmed case of COVID-19, with Montenegro being the last European country to report at least one case.[383] At least one death has been reported in all European countries, apart from the Vatican City.

North America

  1–499 confirmed cases
  500–999
  1,000–1,999
  2,000–4,999
  5,000–9,999

  50,000–99,999
  100,000–199,999
  200,000+ confirmed cases

The first cases in North America were reported in the United States in January 2020. Cases were reported in all North American countries after Saint Kitts and Nevis confirmed a case on 25 March, and in all North American territories after Bonaire confirmed a case on 16 April.[384]

On 26 March 2020, the U.S. became the country with the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 infections, with over 82,000 cases.[385] On 11 April 2020, the U.S. became the country with the highest official death toll for COVID-19, with over 20,000 deaths.[386] As of 21 November 2020 the total cases of COVID-19 are over 13,942,964 with over 383,084 total deaths.[387]

As of 18 February 2021, Canada has reported 834,182 cases and 21,435 deaths,[388] while Mexico has reported 2,013,563 cases and 177,061 deaths.[389] The most cases by state is California with 3,492,045 cases and 47,916 deaths as of 18 February 2021.[390]

Oceania

  1–9 confirmed cases
  10–99 confirmed cases
  100–999 confirmed cases
  1000–9999 confirmed cases
  10,000+ confirmed cases
The pandemic was confirmed to have reached Oceania on 25 January 2020 with the first confirmed case reported in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[391] It has since spread elsewhere in the region,[392] although many small Pacific island nations have thus far avoided the outbreak by closing their international borders. Five Oceania sovereign states have yet to report a case: Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Tonga, and Tuvalu. Australia and New Zealand have been praised for their handling of the pandemic compared to other western nations, with the latter wiping out all community transmission of the virus several times even after being re-introduced into the community. The most recent country or territory to report its first confirmed case was the Federated States of Micronesia, on 8 January 2021.

South America

  no confirmed cases
  1–49 confirmed cases
  50–99 confirmed cases
  100–249 confirmed cases
  250–499 confirmed cases
  500–999 confirmed cases
  1000+ confirmed cases

The pandemic was confirmed to have reached South America on 26 February 2020 when Brazil confirmed a case in São Paulo.[393] By 3 April, all countries and territories in South America had recorded at least one case.[394]

On 13 May, it was reported that Latin America and the Caribbean had reported over 400,000 cases of COVID-19 infection with, 23,091 deaths. On 22 May, citing the rapid increase of infections in Brazil, the WHO declared South America the epicentre of the pandemic.[395][396]

As of 16 February 2021, South America had recorded about 16.9 million confirmed cases and 443,313 deaths from COVID-19. Due to a shortage of testing and medical facilities, it is believed that the outbreak is far larger than the official numbers show.[397]

Antarctica

COVID-19 pandemic in Antarctica
Due to its remoteness and sparse population, Antarctica was the last continent to have confirmed cases of COVID-19 and was one of the last regions of the world affected directly by the pandemic.[398][399][400] The first cases were reported in December 2020, almost a year after the first cases of COVID-19 were detected in China. At least 36 people are confirmed to have been infected.[401] Even before the first cases on the continent were reported, human activity in Antarctica was indirectly impacted.

At sea

The COVID-19 pandemic spread to a number of cruise ships, with the nature of such ships—including crowded semi-enclosed areas, increased exposure to new environments, and limited medical resources—contributing to the heightened risk and rapid spread of the disease.[402]

The British-registered Diamond Princess was the first cruise ship to have a major outbreak on board, with the ship quarantined at Yokohama from 4 February 2020 for approximately one month. Over 700 people became infected, and 14 people died. At the time, the ship accounted for over half the reported cases of SARS-CoV-2 outside of mainland China.[403]

The COVID-19 pandemic spread to many military ships. The nature of these ships, which includes working with others in small enclosed areas and a lack of private quarters for the vast majority of crew, contributed to the rapid spread of the disease, even more so than on cruise ships.[404][405]

Due to the nature of operations security, national militaries may have policies in place that prevent or restrict reporting of SARS-CoV-2 infections and COVID-19 deaths, so although the cases listed below may have been widely reported in reliable sources, confirmation by official spokespeople of the respective militaries is not systematic.[406]
