* NEW REMASTERED EDITION OF THE CLASSIC AMBIENT EXPERIMENTAL WORK BY THE LEGENDARY TERRY RILEY
* BOOKLET WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK & ESSAY
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a new remastered edition of the wonderful ambient and experimental work by composer Terry Riley, "A Rainbow in Curved Air". One of the great modern musical works, Riley composed this influential piece utilising tape loop recording in 1967, performing every instrument himself.
A pioneer of modern music, Riley's all night performances of his work were ground breaking experimental events and influenced composers such as Philip Glass. Released as an album in 1969, "A Rainbow in Curved Air" brought Riley to a wider rock audience. The British band CURVED AIR took their name from this work and PETE TOWNSHEND of The Who was inspired by Riley's music to create the seminal songs "Baba O' Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again". "A Rainbow in Curved Air" remains a highly influential creation.

Mark Jenkins says he used, among an array of synths, an original Yamaha organ as used by Riley himself, thus preserving many of the timbres of the original.
Riley has described the 'score' for A Rainbow (worked, I think, retrospectively from the recording of the improvised performance) as a set of sketches that would not be suitable for live performance, but Mark Jenkins has presumably taken the set of cards Riley produced and created a piece which he can perform live - and he surely has substantial familiarity with Riley's recording, since his performance sounds so authentic.
Spoiler alert!
An amusement is the introduction of the main theme from Tubular Bells around half-way through, underlining the influence Riley had on more than one composer-performer over the years.
It's great to think that this piece is something that one can see in live performance, and Riley himself doesn't play like this anymore. With so many recordings of Riley's In C available, it's good to see this recording of A Rainbow join Katrina Krimsky's piano version and Riley's original. Well worth buying, and I hope Mark Jenkins would consider recording more Riley and minimalist composers generally, since he displays verve and flair. A very nice touch is the incorporation into the recording of a reading of the little fantasy printed on the back cover from Riley's recording.
I bought this reissue because the label, Cherry Red/Reactive have been doing an phenomenal job reissuing titles from the Tangerine Dream catalog (come on Virgin, give it up and let Cherry Red have access to your catalog!)
As such this remastered edition sounds terrific, the music sounds pure, vibrant, and alive. The booklet folds out (think of a front cover as one panel - the fully unfurled booklet is eight panels in size, if that makes sense). The unfolded booklet contains a new, and lengthy article written by Sid Smith. It's a decent read too, and includes a reproduction of the original French release.
All in all this is excellent - some might be bothered by the relatively short playing time (approx. 40 minutes total), but that's being a bit churlish when the music is this good. As reissues go, this is great. I bought the reissue of In C at the same time, well done Cherry Red!
The morale of this small story is that the music is something that is not heard often, but that it for some shapes the future. It was the first electronic piece that I know that I have heard (excluding "popcorn") and it was a direct inspirator for listening in to some even more advanced pieces of music.
I call the music ambient - and that is true, as the music is flowing and intonating with a form but without a solid theme. "Rainbow" is not trance music, but more demanding.
I also call the music daring, referring to the point in time where it arrived. And then again - it was all so psykodelic then. Perhaps it was daring for us, not wanting to listen exclusively to Manfred Mann or Beatles. Well...
The music is classical electronica. It should be a must-listen.
