A delicious murder mystery with a self-appointed detective duo just as lovely as the Powell-Loy classic pairing. Loretta Young and Brian Aherne really did shine and brought the shrewdly written, colorful script to life with their lively engrossment in trying to figure out who the murderer was. Also, Loretta Young casually dropped a remark that quickly became one of my favorites movie quotes so far this year; when telling the police about the row her husband had with a man in the bar, she declared candidly: 'Only two blows were struck. He struck my husband, he struck the floor.'

Though it starts out as a mildly sinister story about a novelist (Brian Aherne) and his wife (Loretta Young) moving into a creepy apartment building, A Night to Remember quickly turns into another Thin Man-inspired couples-solving-crimes-and-it’s-funny movies, of which there are so many. Though few in the subgenre ever rise to the heights of its originator, the ones in which the stars have good chemistry and dexterity with comedy (There’s Always a Woman, with Melvyn Douglas and Joan Blondell comes to mind) can be a lot of fun.

Nothing makes me believe more in marriage than screwball-comedy murder-mystery hijinks! I'm not kidding! The chemistry! The adventure! The camaraderie! The puns! This is how you keep love alive!
Brian Aherne writes murder mysteries, and when he and wife Loretta Young move into a new apartment in a scary dark house, he turns sleuth when 'a stiff' is found in the yard.
There's ample chemistry between the leads and some nice work from scatty Lee Patrick, Jeff Donnell, Sidney Toler, and Don Costello. This is a kind of 'Thin Man' mystery, but without the special qualities William Powell and Myrna Loy brought to the characters of Nick and Nora.
This fun comedy is based on a novel called 'The Frightened Stiff' and it bubbles along just fine, helped by the playing of the leads: I always feel that Aherne is overlooked when compared to other actors of the period.
Well, now I need to watch more Loretta Young films. First the jovial, playful Gallagher from Platinum Blonde and now a Myrna Loy-inspired performance: straight out of the Thin Man series.
Absolutely amusing with Loretta Young & Brian Aherne totally out of their depth when finding themselves in a middle of a murder investigation. Includes double-faints! A little thin in parts, but real adorable in other. The two certainly knows how to kiss with an audience!
Brian Aherne & Loretta Young are quite possibly two of the most adorable humans to ever exist. This was so much fun and honestly way too cute they had beautiful chemistry together I wish they could have made a series of these films.
An absolute delight. A Night to Remember is a small, unpretentious and insanely cute screwball comedy. As the amateur sleuths Brian Aherne and Loretta Young worked very well together and the characters relationship is incredibly sweet. I bought the two as a couple and wouldn’t mind going to dinner with them. The Troy’s would be a fun hang. The mystery at the center was lackluster, but the couples relationship and witty dialogue was more than enough to keep me satisfied.
Another in the long line of breezy comedies about murders being solved by impossibly attractive married couples. I seriously found myself missing the dialog because I was so distracted by Loretta Young’s face. How is anything that perfect? I can’t spend too much time thinking about how incredibly talented she also was because I’ll just get pissed off at the inequities of the universe.
Another favorite (though more down to earth than Young), Lee Patrick was also in this. She didn’t have much to do, but her few scenes were lively and fun. Gale Sondergaard also shows up, so I naturally thought there would be a Nazi subplot, but I guessed wrong.

A couple moves into the building from hell and with each strange occurrence, they try and unravel the mystery that enshrouds their new place of residence. Not all the jokes land but Loretta Young and Brian Aherne were so likable it just never seemed to matter. Loved Aherne’s interactions with Inspector Hankins (Sidney Toler) and his detectives. Those were definitely the most amusing scenes for me.
