A guitar god is being born right before our eyes and ears. He effortlessly plays guitar oriented blues rock. The material is not there yet, but Joe Bonamassa is on his way. There are many toe tappers on this compact disc and better things are coming as we know.

I first heard Joe Bonamassa back in 2000 at a blues festival in Wisconsin. I was so impressed with his style and ability that I bought this album at the show. I was a bit disappointed when I listened to the album because it lacked of much of the intensity of the live show. I more or less dismissed the album as generic blues rock and shelved it. About a year ago, I heard him on a blues radio show and decided to give the album another chance. I am glad I did as this album is much better than I remember.

Joe plays blues rock music in a hard fashion and it talented enough to pull this off. His guitar and voice on this album are very in your face, as if to say, "Here I am, this is my music, if you don't like it, too bad." "Cradle Rock" starts this album off very much in this spirit. He has an awesome slide guitar solo. I actually found that I enjoy all of the songs from this album. The music is mostly heavy blues rock oriented, but there are moments when Joe slows things down just a bit to a moderate tempo feel ("If Heartaches Were Nickels" for example).

The best way I can describe A New Day Yesterday is boogie music. This is probably why I enjoyed his concert so much. His guitar is obviously the focal point of the group, but there is a surprising amount of bass as well. More bass than I expected and more than is on most blues rock groups. These two, together with gritty, unrefined vocals makes it are not to tap the foot to keep time.

The only complaint I have with the album is the dirty vocals. At times Joe is almost screaming and could pass as a singer for death metal band. I hear that his vocals improve over the next few albums and I patiently await listening to them. Joe pens or co-pens the majority of the songs on this album and the group does an excellent job making the music their own. I really enjoy "Trouble Waiting," "Cradle Rock," and "Nuthin' I Wouldn't Do (For a Woman Like You)," but the rest are great songs as well.

Joe Bonamassa is certainly worth checking out, especially if you enjoy moder blues rock. Like I say, I have not heard his later stuff (I will soon), so I can't say whether this album is his best, but I would venture a guess that it is not. Did I mention that this album has great guitar work? I also recommend this album to guitar heavy music fans. Joe can play quite well.

A pretty good album from Joe Bonamassa, but not so good as his magnificent Blues Deluxe. He just doesn't seem to have completely found his voice on this one, but the music is still very good and highly enjoyable.
